France - shopping boycott 4 April

Othersideofthechannel · 30/03/2009 12:46

Email currently going round telling people to avoid buying anything this Saturday in order to bring down prices.

Is it for real? And what do you think of the idea? Has this kind of boycott ever achieved anything in other countries?

If it's true, it's a ridiculous idea during a recession when the only thing that will get us out of this mess is if people do start spending again - I don't mean pre-recession overspending, but just "normal".
Also, if it achieves its goal of bringing down prices, will presumably also achieve the goal of putting (smaller first) companies out of business.
However, I'm not an economist so I could be entirely wrong!

Not heard anything about it
Be interested to find out

don`t think it will work

I've received 2 versions of this email today.

One qualifies it by saying don't go to hypermarkets, local independent shops permitted.

Will have to shop in Switzerland then.

Who is organising the boycott?

It doesn't say who is organising it, just that "Ce message n'est issu d'absolument aucun parti politique ni d'aucun syndicat."

This is what makes me think it is a hoax.

I never go shopping on Saturdays anyway. I was just wondering whether to forward it or not.

I haven't heard anything about it.
But then, who needs an excuse to avoid hypermarkets!!
(Not that I'll be in France on Saturday, anyway!)
