...
Wieder flattern durch die Lüfte
Süße, wohlbekannte Düfte
Streifen ahnungsvoll das Land
Veilchen träumen schon,
Wollen balde kommen
Horch, von fern ein leiser Harfenton!
Frühling, ja du bist's!
Dich hab ich vernommen!

Book it.

If your parents can afford it, don't worry about the school. Your children will be much better served by having a happy mum who has spent some time with her family than going back to school on the first day of term which is just a lot of faffing about normally.

Do something for yourself, Admylin. You do so much for everyone else.

OP posts:
ZZZen · 17/03/2009 11:44

you really wanted to go admylin and now your dp are making it possible for you, I don't think you should hesitate.

taipo · 17/03/2009 12:35

I say go for it too. I know it sounds like a lot of money but you'll have happy dc and happy dp, not to mention yourself. Well worth it imo.

I wouldn't even give the day off school a second thought.

admylin · 17/03/2009 12:51

I'm going to book one way - I can afford that and then see how we can sort out the return tickets once we're there.

I asked in chat what other mners would do and I was quite shocked by the responses, depressed me abit to be honest but enough of 'head in the sand' and when I've booked and I tell the dc that will be worth it to see how happy they will be.

canella · 17/03/2009 13:06

can i sneak on to your thread!! i'm scottish and i'm married to a german man and we've just moved with our 3 kids to unter franken!! i mean just moved - i've only been here 10 days!! i popped onto this thread last year for advice about where to live - we had thought we'd have lived in wurzburg but it was too far to travel - my dh is working in muennerstadt so we're living on the edge of the rhon valley!! came from living in quite a rural part of england but this is really rural!! there's not a sound when i open the windows!!

just havin some obvious trouble with the language - been with dh for 10 years but his english is fluent so i've been a bit lazy and only tried to speak it when oma and opa were around!! cant find any lessons just yet but will hunt them out once i can get the kids sorted!! dd is 7 so started in the 2nd class yesterday and went on the bus this morning!! would never have let her do that in england! and boys (4.5 and 2.7) starting KG this week!

just wanted to sneak onto your thread for some advice and to share your good and bad experiences about living in deutschland!!

taipo · 17/03/2009 13:20

Hi canella and welcome. Plenty of good advice here and a chance to offload any gripes you may have! How old are your dc?

Admylin, book the tickets home now. If you wait you risk paying through the nose or not being able to get back at all. On second thoughts though.......

taipo · 17/03/2009 13:39

I've just read your other thread, admylin. There's some good advice on there even if it may be a little hard to take in atm.

Canella, just reread your post and noticed that you mentioned your dc's ages. Sorry! [must get new brain emoticon]

It's amazing, isn't it, how much more independent kids are expected to be here. I think it's great on the whole although it does take some getting used to.

MmeLindt · 17/03/2009 13:47

Hi Canella, and welcome. I think I remember your thread asking for advice about where to live in that area. Muennerstadt, that is not far away from where my DH's family is from, Fladungen. My PILs still have the Oma's house in Fladungen and they go up their occasionally for the weekend. Let me know if you need any info about the Rhön. It is a lovely area but as you say very rural.

If you are looking for a good place to go for a day trip, have a run up to Mellrichstadt then take the Rhönzügle to Fladungen, to the Freilandmuseum. It is really great, an old steam (or diesel, depending on the day) train. The museum is well worth a visit, especially on the Museumfest. I think it is in August. They open the backery and the mill and show the children how to bake bread and make flour (or was it oil?).

Isn't it nervewracking, sending the DC off on their own? Seems so foreign to us but it is so normal to the Germans.

Admylin
You are coming back though? Don't worry about what anyone says in Chat, they have no idea what it is like living so far from home.

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 17/03/2009 13:53

Admylin
I take back what I just wrote, I had not read the thread at that point. Have had a look at the other thread now and tbh, I did not know it was like that with you and your DH. I tend to agree with the others on the thread, you need to sort something out.

OP posts:
admylin · 17/03/2009 13:58

No, they were all really nice in chat but I was surprised at how shocked they were at h's behaviour (it was the getting A's in return for flight money)

Welcome CAnella, I remember you too. You'll settle in quickly with the 2 little ones at Kindergarten, you just have to attend all th eopen days, festivals, Easter breakfasts/teas and such like to get to know the other parents! They don't do easter bonnets here but they do loads of egg painting, decorating and Easter rabbit stuff! There will probably be an egg hunt somewhere too. Hope you all settle in quickly. How did the actual move go? Did you get professionals to do it?

admylin · 17/03/2009 13:59

I'm cringing abit to be honest regarding oher thread.

MmeLindt · 17/03/2009 14:25

Don't cringe, Admylin. You have nothing to be ashamed of. It was good for you to see that his behaviour is unreasonable. It is hard sometimes but that is the good thing about MN, you get very honest answers.

OP posts:
admylin · 17/03/2009 14:28

OMG I have just booked one way tickets - booked from my account but it's good to know we only have to count the days! 11 to go.

MmeLindt · 17/03/2009 14:39

Well done, your DC are going to be so happy.

OP posts:
trockodile · 17/03/2009 15:10

Welcome Canella, and hope you are settling in ok. Do your children speak fluent German?

I do German courses at the Volkshochschule-VHS and find them pretty good and fairly cheap.

Best place (IMO) for a daytrip is Playmobil Land! We live 4 hours away and still have season tickets! I think it is the best theme park ever, as there are no 'rides' as such-children just play.

We have had such gorgeous weather here today-I had to stay in Kindergarten for nearly an hour as DS was having such good fun playing outside he did not want to come home!

It is so funny to see his German coming on so well- he likes to speak it at home sometimes, and this morning I was woken up at 6am by him shouting from the loo-'Mama, Ich habe eine grosse, grosse puh-puh gemacht! Hilfe!' It is funny, he calls me Mummy when he talks english, but in German-Mama! He has also just followed the German painter around the house, chatting in German with english thrown in when he gets stuck! He loves to communicate which is good I suppose (painter was slightly surprised!)

Admylin, good luck with your trip back. It does sound as though you are doing the right thing in standing up to your DH. Hope you all have a good time.

ZZZen · 17/03/2009 16:39

haven't seen your other thread admylin, so don't know what was said. Don't take it to heart if it was painful reading. Look forward to your trip now.

Welcome canella. Hope you'll soon settle in. I'm sure your social life will kick off a bit when the dc's does at kiga.

Do you have a Volkshochschule near you? - Like an adult education centre. They will have a programme at your local library or Rathaus (town hall).

taipo · 17/03/2009 16:47

Good for you, admylin. I think you really need this trip and I hope it will help you get things sorted.

Oh and don't be embarrassed by the other thread. You knew that your h was being unreasonable and hopefully this will give you the strength to stand up to him.

hupa · 17/03/2009 17:18

admylin - well done for booking the tickets, I´m sure you´re doing the right thing. The other thread was probably very hard for you to read, but there was a lot of good advice. You´ve proably been together with dh for so long and are used to his attitudes that it probably seems normal to you. Hopefully seeing how many people were shocked by his attitude can give you the strength to try to change things. I hope you have a fantastic time in England.

Welcome canella. Hope you´re settling in well. I´m another one who would recommend learning with the VHS, I found them to be really good and it´s a nice way to meet other people.

trockodile - thanks for the information about the film. Unfortunately we didn´t have time to go. I have to say I don´t think ds will be the problem, but dd who is 6 sobbed throughout the last 60 minutes of Madagascar 2 because it was too sad/happy/ emotional etc. She definitely takes after me .

Well the lovely weather you´ve all been on about has finally reached us today. I spent about 2 hours gardening this afternoon, but can now hardly move my back, but the garden looks a lot tidier.

Can VW not put the car through the TüV? Our garage used to have one day a week when the Prüfer was there. You can often download the registration stuff online and then fill out the forms at home. You still have to go to the Amt but at least you have a checklist of all the documents you need.

There is a fab summer toboggan in the Rhön, I think it is on the Kreuzberg. I will ask my PILs. Do you ski?

OP posts:
canella · 17/03/2009 19:02

i can ski and really want the kids to learn!! My in laws are in weimar so hoping to spend some time next winter in thuringer wald!!
will get my dh to phone VW tom - the TuV man gave me a list of things to get changed!! i'm useless tho with cars even in english!! will let you know how we get on!! thanks for the advice!!

MmeLindt · 17/03/2009 19:04

You can ski in the Rhön, in Oberweissenbrunn.

admylin, I've seen your thread now and I agree with the others, there is nothing for you to cringe about. I think there were some very helpful comments there. Hope you have a nice break. It will be good to talk about your grandmother and for you all to visit her grave and just spend time relaxing with people who know you and care about you.

Canella you really have been busy. It would be good to have someone accompany you. Is there anyone you could ask?

westvan · 17/03/2009 23:13

I'm SO glad you booked tickets, admylin! You need this break so badly and it will do all of you a lot of good, I think. Time to take a deep breath and think about all the stuff that's been swimming around in your head.

Do remember, though, that if you're kids are going to be out of school, even for one day (if it's not due to illness) and especially around holiday time, you have to apply to the school principal for permission beforehand. It has to do with the German "Schulpflicht", I think. Some schools might be more leniant, but I've heard of others having a fit when kids came back a day or two after school started up again.

Nice to "meet" you, canella!

MmeLindt · 18/03/2009 06:27

Morning all.

I have a guest for breakfast so have just had a yogurt and some tea to keep myself going until she gets here. My neighbour, she is really lovely.

Trying to motivate myself to bake some rolls, I think I need more tea first. I am still a bit woozy.

I thought we were going to have to take DD to A&E last night. She seems to have a urinary infection, it was certainly really sore when she was doing a wee. I gave her ibroprofen and she is a lot better this morning. I am a bit uncertain whether to go or not. I will see how she is today. She is drinking loads of water so maybe that will help.

I don't think that she drinks enough in school. I wonder if I should give her her Sigg bottle with water in her school bag. Particularly when it is warm.

I hate it when the DC are in pain, she was screaming last night.
