What is the difference between toi (you) and toit (roof) in the pronounciation? On the website that I used to listen to the pronounciation they both sounded exactly the same.

Perhaps 'toi' is said a tiny bit more quickly (sort of staccato?). But I have to say, I don't hear a difference either - I'd figure it out from (a) context (b) how it sounds if the next word starting with a vowel ("toit orange" would not sound the same as "toi, orange")

She also has to draw "un chinois à côte". That will be interesting. Bit strange thing to ask the children to draw.

She drew a little man with a flag. We looked up the Chinese flag and she drew that.

Her best friend in school is Chinese, I must phone her Dad and ask what he thinks. I found it very wierd.

DH says there is no difference in pronounciation for toi/toit.

A 'chinois' is also a conical metal sieve but that's a pretty strange thing to draw. DH has never heard of a 'chinois à côte'

Weta · 02/03/2009 23:10

My DH agrees with Othersideofthechannel's on both points...

Incidentally, "toit orange" wuold sound the same as "toi, orange" as you would never pronounce the second t even before a vowel.
