I can't get through to the woman at the shipping company and they're coming to get my stuff on Monday.

baskets - not sure what they are made of, from ikea. rattan or something?
wellies
tent - last used 6mths ago
umm...I'm sure there are other things...
stones

I'm sending one box by air, will the same sort of rules apply? Can I pack
tea bags
unopened spice mixes
loads of contact lenses and solution

I should maybe have thought about this a bit earlier.

Have you tried the NZ Customs website?

NZ is pretty strict on anything agricultural, e.g. anything which might contain seeds or soil-borne diseases or fruit/veg. Good Luck.

ZacharyQuack · 09/01/2009 10:58

This is probably the page you need.

There is no soil on anything, but I'm worried they might want to check and then charge me loads and make me wait ages for my stuff, and I'll be all miserable in an unfurnished flat for months and months.

I'll check the website, thanks.

Well I'm not allowed to import anti-personnel mines, cloned and hybrid human embryos, marine mammals or rough diamonds but I think my tent should be ok. Although I can't work out whether I get charged if they inspect things, or just if the items need treatment. They probably will want to look at my tent and boots etc, but if they are clean they shouldn't be a problem should they? I hate moving, I'm never ever going to do it again.

You get charged for having stuff treated. You have to ask to have it done otherwise they take the item and destroy it.
The spices and basket will set of the customs radar. The tent will most likely slide by.

beansmum I wouldn't bother with any food stuffs whether still sealed or not. As long as shoes and outdoor equipment are clean they should be fine. We were charged however for somebody coming to the house after our container arrived to check all the boxes which had to remain sealed until he'd been. From memory being 6 years ago it was a few hundred dollars. I can only advise declare absolutely everything. If you declare customs tend to be fine if you forget anything they love their jobs!!!!

They will zoom in on anything made from natural materials and also outdoor equipment. But if you declare it you should be fine - just have to hang around for 30 mins or so while they look at things and check for weevils in the wood/cane etc. The outdoor equipment they will be worried about seeds in any soil so if you are meticulous about cleaning beforehand and they can see everything looks clean then you should be OK. I have to say I think there's possibly a very small risk they might want a tent treated but I imagine they get dozens of germans a week bringing their tents in to go backpacking so I can't imagine why they'd single you out!
