Thanks Gabster for the inspiration for the thread!

Add your resolutions here & I can slip alongside and pretend I'll make some too.
Still too fragile - my sleep patterns go haywire when I'm home, stay up till 1 or 2am, then awake at 5am (6 here, usual flipping school time) then I come back & keep crashing on the sofa at 10pm and wake up at 4 bright & breezy.

We have snow, very pretty and h is off till Weds so am pushing him out for Streupflicht, bartered it for a fry-up with real English bacon, hmmmmmm.
Forecast is for -12C to -14C tonight - and when the children go back to school on Thursday. Yikes.

It's still blowing a gale out there. I need to go shopping but no way am I going out in this.

admylin · 10/02/2009 08:20

No, don't risk it taipo, there are real storm warnings out so it could get worse.

Dd is so fed up, I ordered her a sleeping bag from Amazon (but a different seller) and they wrote delivery would be sent on 9th or 10th - now they sent an eamail (well, last night) that it won't be before the 8th calendar week. I wrote back asking to cancel the order and dd is fed up because it's now too late to order from anywhere else. Only option would be to rush out to Karstadt sport or Real but that doesn't mean they will have one she likes and is affordable.

Hmm, I think she'll have to borrow one.

taipo · 10/02/2009 09:19

Aaargh, I have wandering bins! I just looked out the window and the wind has managed to open the garage even though I thought I'd locked it and now the big green bin is halfway down the drive. Really don't want to go out and retrieve it.

admylin · 10/02/2009 09:23

Sounds really bad taipo.

We were in BW once when a mega storm hit and alot of the tiles from the roof went, so did alot of the other's in the village. A neighbour came up into out attic and tried to hang/put the tiles back on from inside.

hupa · 10/02/2009 10:55

Well we´re back. We had a great time. The weather wasn´t brilliant, but it was warm and we even managed to go swimming a few times. We left in a snow storm and it was snowing when we got back, which made us appreciate the warmth even more.

We haven´t got strong winds here - yet, but it´s been torrentially raining all morning. I´ve got to leave in 20 mins to get dc from Kindergarten and even if I drive I´m going to get soaked just walking 20metres from the house to the car. We live on a hill and the main road looks like a river at the moment.

TheGabster - have you found a house yet? I don´t envy you the packing - it´s always amazes me how much stuff we have. It´s always surprising when you empty a cupboard and the contents seem to multiply as you take them out, so you´re left with a huge pile of stuff that you can´t imagine ever fitted in such a small space.

admylin - that Sahnetorte sounds disgusting. I must admit I once made one for my ante-natal group and it looked great when I removed the ring before they arrived. When I walked back into the kitchen 15 mins later it had spread all over the table. I felt like such a failure, although it tasted great.

admylin · 10/02/2009 10:58

Glad you had a nice holiday hupa, did you come back really rested? I always come back totally chilled and rested when I've been back to UK. It's usually all gone after about 2 weeks of being back but it is lovely while it lasts!

admylin · 10/02/2009 11:00

Reminds me of teh very first time I attempted to mak eone of those German style baked cheesecakes. It looked lovely and after teh time in recipe I took it out of the oven. When I cut into it the middle was still runny and I couldn't even stop it to put it back in the oven! What a waste.

hupa · 10/02/2009 11:03

I felt really rested when I got back, but after a day of unpacking suitcases, washing and ironing it almost feels like we never went away. Good luck with your meeting this afternoon - hope it goes well.

TheGabster · 10/02/2009 11:52

Hey - v. windy here too - snow shovel just got blown over by the front door (scared the pants out of me). All the shutters are rattling. Bit spooky.

Hate it when its windy here 'cos ther is a big pine tree just outside our living room window which sways very scarily. Always thought it was going to crash on top of us one day.

taipo · 11/02/2009 11:07

Glad you had a good holiday hupa.

It was windy nearly the whole day yesterday. Quite calm today and even a bit sunny. I'm keeping the bins locked up though for the time being in case they start to go awandering again.

Last year I managed to fit in a few sauna trips over the winter which really helped keep me going through the cold months. Haven't had time this year and neither has my friend I go with. I'm really missing it.

hupa · 12/02/2009 10:24

I´m not really into saunas. I think I was put off after my first visit to dh´s parents. They had a sauna at home and it wasn´t until they´d switched it on that I realised I was expected to sit in there naked with mil and fil. I don´t mind being naked in front of strangers, but somehow I was just too embarrassed in front of the in-laws. I made up some excuse about a cold starting and spent the next couple of days moaning about an imaginary sore throat.

admylin · 12/02/2009 10:30

I can't breath in saunas but I love those dampfbad ones where the air isn't dry. Don't know if they have the same effect as saunas.

That was one of the first things that shocked me in Germany, colleagues and the boss all going to the sauna naked as Betriebsausflug! And nearly all women still had hairy legs and arm pits! Can you imagine it in UK? Would never happen!

hupa · 12/02/2009 10:37

Well you were obviously brave enough to go if you saw the hairy legs and armpits.

The Germans find it mindboggling that the English wear swimming costumes in saunas. The in-laws went on holiday once and not only did the English guests wear swimwear in the sauna, they also blocked the door to avoid having to share the space with naked Germans. Pil found this hilarious.

admylin · 12/02/2009 10:39

I went in with a big bath towel on to hide the fact that I had not taken my swimsuit off and then very quickly had a perfectly timed asthma attack so had to leave!

hupa · 12/02/2009 10:41
Grin
taipo · 12/02/2009 11:48

God, no way would I go in a sauna with my in-laws or work colleagues for that matter!

Otherwise I've managed to overcome my inhibitions about being naked, mainly due to the fact that I'm so short-sighted that when I go into the sauna and everthing is blurred I imagine that other people can't see me either.

TheGabster · 12/02/2009 12:13

LOL at MIL and FIL Sauna experiences. Think would do the same!

Love sauna but always take v.big towel to cover everything necessary (British to the core).

Could certainly do a sauna right now - snow is piling up out there. Brrrr. Had about a foot already and have to go out again this afternoon to see a sick friend. Not looking forward to fighting my way through it all with the pushchair.

MmeLindt · 12/02/2009 12:22

hi. The thread got bumped down my list of threads I am on and I kind of lost track of you. We are in ikea today, just having coffee and letting the DC play. DH and I are very sociable. He is Reading the paper and I am MNetting.

Wonder why my iPhone always capitilises Reading.

There are loads of wee sparrows in the roof space of the restaurant. They keep coming down to eat the left over crumbs on the floor and tables. A bit unhygienic

LOL at the slimey cake. It does make her more sympathisch though. My mil makes a quark cream cake. Shall I ask her for the recipe?

admylin · 12/02/2009 12:33

Hi, I was worried, I thought you'd left us mmelindt! Is it half term in Geneva?

The neighbour has been very qiuet this week, I was thinking of ways and excuses to not invite her in quite so often but she hasn't rang teh bell at all this week. She must have felt the vibes at the weekend. I was quite mad that she ignored my plea not to talk about my dc getting a dog infront of them. I don't want their hopes to be built up because I'm not ready to get one yet and h hasn't said he wants one either. She constantly pushes on and on about it and I've asked her 3 times now not to mention it again.

Dd is getting all excited about her sleep over party at friends house on Friday! we have to pack tonight and she already has a pile of stuff to pack ready, neatly folded in her room.

taipo · 12/02/2009 13:22

Hi ML.

Reading and MNetting sounds very civilised for a trip to IKEA. We are usually rowing after about 5 minutes.

admylin · 13/02/2009 07:35

I hate going to Ikea. I can never find what I want to look at and as you say if h is with us we end up having a row at some point! Last couple of times we went the restaurant was rubbish too but dd and her cousin enjoyed playing in the play area and they gave me a phone incase they wanted out which they did just as I was standing behind 20 people at the till!

ErnestTheBavarian · 13/02/2009 11:43

Hello everyone, back from UK - was lovely and useful re looking at areas. Flights (journey and baby) fine both ways, no problems at all. Back to lots of snow and panicking as not found anyone to 'do' us when away next week. I asked 3 people so far, whve all said no (inc professional house dienst, who usefully replied, maybe next year ). These things stress me out, and going away a week tomorrow. These things don't bother dh in slightest.

anyway, hope all well. any news?

ErnestTheBavarian · 13/02/2009 11:46

btw, meant to ask - best place for tuperware that's easy to get to and cheapish - about to prepare about a zillion mini meals for dd, ice cube try too small and faffy, but still only need teeny portion sizes, about 2 tbsp - any ideas? you talking of ikea made me think, but there, it tends to be say 2 small & 2 med/large tubs altogether, oder? need lots of v. small

TheGabster · 13/02/2009 13:01

Hey Ernest. Glad you had a good trip.

Have you had a look at the Tchibo website? Otherwise, if there is a "kaufland" supermarket near you, they usually have some good tupperware type stuff. Otherwise, if you have the time, I would go to Galleria Kaufhof. They have a huge selection.

G

TheGabster · 13/02/2009 15:03

Actually, Ernest when do you need it by?

I have got lots of little pots with lids my sister sent me which I'm not sure I really need to be honest. You could have them. Would you want to meet next week?
