Anyone in the US - what is the equivalent of Mothercare and John Lewis?

Hello

expecting baby no 2 in jan. Want to buy new mattress for moses basket and also probably for the cot too.

Can any of you lovely ladies in the US tell me where to buy - I am feeling all homesick and missing good old John Lewis and Mothercare

I have had a quick look online and dont know the shops - Target? Walmart? Sears? JC Penny? Who are they all, how do I know if they are good or crap??! I just want to buy quality mattresses from reputable shops...

Also, am I right in assuming the safety advice is to use new mattresses for each baby - does that include our bugaboo - should I get a new matress fro that too?

Your thoughts will be much appreciated!!

Sears is from memory the closest to John Lewis of your list. There is also Nordstrom's is more like a cross between JL and Selfridges I think. Not sure about Mothercare equivalents.

Thanks Duchesse - I am in Seattle, so there is a NOrdstroms, will check it out.

I am off to bed, can't keep eyes open, but will bump this in the morning and see if anyone else can help out too...

Worth bumping in the morning, definitely- there's not many people about here- tis a little early I think... Good night.

bumpity bump!

Am in US right now, with jet lagged toddler while rest of family sleep (how long?!) and desperately need a new buggy to get us home! Online would suit me best. I know BabiesRUS do loads of stuff here.

AL: new mattress used to be the advice, but I thought it changed, so you wouldn't need one. Prob worth checking online at FSID or DoH or the like.

And I know what you mean about missing John Lewis - one-stop shop for me!

AnneL

I got loads of stuff from Target - both in store and online. Also love Macy's for baby clothes and stuff. Other option is Babies'r'us - a version of toys'r'us.

Good luck

I got my baby mattress and Babies r us. They sell good brands - I think ours was a Sealey.

I don't think Nordstrom sells furniture.

Come and join us on the All Those in the US thread

IMO, there is nowhere like John Lewis but Target sells pretty much everything you need for babies. All my friends who have second babies reused their mattresses but you could check with your OB/ paediatrician.

COngrats!

CornBreadQueen · 28/12/2008 03:07

target and walmart!

MadamDeathstarOverBethlehem · 28/12/2008 03:13

We got all our baby stuff from Babies R Us. Macy's was the best for clothes. Also good were outlet stores for the Children's Place, Carters and Osh Kosh.

AnnieLaurie · 28/12/2008 03:29

Thanks Superbunny and everyone else, I seem to be checking in on my thread at all the wrong times, not sure who will be about now.

Superbunny - I keep looking at the 'US THread' but never get round to posting anything cos its a bit like suddenly joining a 4 lane motorway where everyone is driving at full speed - ie I can't keep up with the chat, dont know where it starts/ends!!!

Guess its going to be a big online order from Target for me then.

Just jump in, AL! It does move quickly sometimes but we're a friendly bunch

Have fun ordering.

BlueCowNowIsLowingAndDCAwake · 28/12/2008 08:06

went to Target yesterday - it was great for all baby/ child stuff! And they had a dedicated parking space for 'expectant mothers' - can't be bad.

SuperBunny · 28/12/2008 16:19

Whaaat? My Target doesn't have those? And I've never seen a P&T parking space in this country. What a great Target you have there

ilovelovemydog · 28/12/2008 16:32

Macy's/Norstroms - John Lewis is definitely more upmarket than Target!

SofiaAmes · 28/12/2008 16:36

Target is the best. You can also order online. Or look on Amazon. Sign up for Amazon Priime (cost $60, but worth it) and you can get free second day shipping on most amazon things. And you pay no tax with amazon, so ends up being the best place for high ticket items. Macy's is good when there are sales. I only go to Sears for appliances. Babies R Us is ok, but sales people suck. Really, Target is the best.

I think that if you took care of your old mattress and stored it somewhere dry and clean, then there should be no reason why you have to buy a new one. The advice is aimed at the lowest common denominator who can't tell that the wee and vomit covered, never cleaned, moldy mattress from their last child should not be reused. Anyway, moses basket and buggy mattresses are small enough to put in the washing machine. That's what I did with mine.
