Emigrating to OR in the US in June next year. Have my Visa interview in a month I'm married to a US citizen.
We will be moving out of our property in Mid April and trying to get together what will be shipped and contain companies after the interview. Just wandering if Food items can be shipped with our household goods? Ie. tea bags, chocolate, crisps, squash?
If so what items do you miss and what should i start stocking up on?

I'm not sure if you'd be allowed - but it's worth a try. Especially for chocolate - it's awful here - I get my mum to post my Cadbury's out all the time!

You can easily get 'normal' tea bags here, Tetley do a 'British Blend' which is just regular tea, and I've seen Liptons, and PG too - often supermarkets have an international section and you can pick up UK products like HP sauce, Heinz beans, squash etc...

I can't really think of anything you'd def have to ship over, except chocolate! There's just as much choice in the shops as there is in the UK!

I had a friend who emigrated to Switzerland earlier in the year and she was ONLY allowed to take bottles, jars and cans which had not been opened already.

Not sure if it's the same for the US. I'm sure that the shipping company should tell you what's allowed.

Good luck!

Yes you may! We have had three transatlantic moves and everytime I have included a box of "essential" foodstuff in my shipment. I have never asked - I just tend to slip it in and the packers don't tend to ask. You will find that you can purchase most things you miss here though but it does help you get through the home sickness! Remember if you are moving in winter your container will suffer sub zero temperatures. We had some friends who put a load of wine in their shipment and it was all ruined. Good luck!

We moved to the US earlier this year and I think the international removals company told us we couldn't take any food at all. Re wine, we were told we could take some as long as it was bought through a wine club (not sure why), but in the end we left it out as it could have meant the whole container took weeks or months more to arrive than it would otherwise (basically it had to go through Philly to be cleared through customs, rather than NY, where we were, and no one could tell us how long that would take). Talk to your removals company at the time re what you can/cannot take - not surprisingly the rules change.
