Der Weihnachtsmarkt: Glühwein und Waffeln und Lebkuchen

finknottle · 01/12/2008 10:53

Hope I typed that right, have lead in my boots this morning. Had a great weekend with lots of Glühwein and Weinschorlen and Nikoläuser.
Didn't get back from a Christmas party till 8 last night and too late to make the Kranz. I usually start decorating on Dec 1st so will do that with d after school and then light a candle tonight.
We're in the UK as well for C'mas but I still do decorations, put the tree baubles in glass vases so even they get an outing.
I love white fairy lights, put some all over the place and in the evenings leave the lamps off and light downstairs with fairy lights alone.

The tree lighting on Saturday was great fun, friends of ours were there and their 13 yr old d took mine to the fire & waited 15 mins in the crowds for Nikolaus while I was plied with Glühwein.
Think my ideal Christmas is Advent here and C'mas day in the UK, then back here for Sylvester. So this year should be good.
Mind you when we're here we have roast beef on the 25th, or goose. Think if I served Truthahn, h would clobber me with it.

Taipo have mailed you.
Have only one school meeting this week but a stack of reports to write. It is very good for my rusty brain but v hard work getting into. Feel rather fragile this morning, housework beckons and all I want is a bucket of tea and an aspirin

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 08/12/2008 21:48

LOL at the Viennese spy.

No weihnachtsmarkt in geneva, although the one in montreux is supposed to be great. Might go there next week.

The Swiss put their decorations up earlier than the Germans I think. Lots of trees up already.

Must do the rest of the xmas shopping tomorrow. Also did the amazon uk thing. Massive bargain for us at the moment as the pound is so weak.

DH home and now asleep on the couch. He could have stayed at the office if that is all.

VT hope you get farfar away from mil next move

TheGabster · 09/12/2008 12:29

No fighting over my DH - besides it was a shocking occurrence you know. He has now settled into usual "off work" mode.

SO far today - let me do breakfast, migrated to the sofa, came back to the table for lunch. Has walked dog and just spent 1hr in the bathroom. Is now finally getting dressed .

Well, I suppose it is his holiday.

admysteltoe · 10/12/2008 08:45

OK TheGabster, you can keep him then !

Is this it, has he finished work for good or does he go back for a few more months?

My h keeps applying for places but no luck yet and then he talks about getting a permenant offer here if her can publish and prove himself, establish his lab etc ...I don't know how I will take it if he comes home one day with his offer of staying for ever - I'll have to try and look happy for him but inside I'll be hearing 'doomed, doomed you shall stay here for ever' and then evil laughter (I am going abit mad)

TheGabster · 10/12/2008 20:08

How long have you lived there now Ad? Don't you think you might feel different in 6 months' time?

We are still waiting for official confirmation about DH's job - but if it all goes ahead he will go back to work after drei König's Tag and then finish around the end of Feb. Then hopefully 1mo at home with us before we do the big move.

Mme - am dead [green] of your cleaner!!!

admysteltoe · 10/12/2008 21:33

No TheGabster, I think I've been here so long now that I won't feel differently in 6 months time. I might be able to arrange my life long term though if I knew I was staying put. I don't bother putting too much effort into much at all nowadays because I don't see the point. We'll only know if we stay in 2 years time though. Another 2 years wasted if we do have to move.

SSSantaClausIzzzComing · 11/12/2008 08:20

I know how you feel admylin but I do think it is probably best to live as if you were there long-term. However actually practising what I preach is another thing I'm afraid.

So d'ya like my xmas name or is it too long-winded?

admysteltoe · 11/12/2008 09:01

Morning! Just wrote a load and my computer froze - again. The new one is here but I have to install everything.

Did a good job this morning. Gotthe Christmas parcel sent off to UK to my family. Cost a fortune to post but that's life eh.

Lidl had a Scnäpppchenmarkt today in a tent on the carpark. They were queing at 7:30 as if there was going to be some amazing speacial offers. Never seen the car park so full. I bet alot of people will only be able to get stuff that way this Christmas. Any silly me, stopped at the farmer's market instead and spent 10 euro on a little pot of vegtable and chive cream and some sesame ring breads.

finknottle · 11/12/2008 09:11

I spilt coffee all over my desk yesterday, managed to push all the papers on the floor, then my mobile & camera to land on top of them but my keyboard is still dead.
Have pinched the boys' for now but that's only working as I've imposed a ban on computers during the week. They'll grab it back tomorrow, s1 finishes school at 11 on Fridays.

Admylin, reading this:
"I don't know how I will take it if he comes home one day with his offer of staying for ever I'll have to try and look happy for him but inside I'll be hearing 'doomed, doomed you shall stay here for ever' and then evil laughter (I am going a bit mad)"

You can't stay here if you feel so strongly about it, you'll just be wasting your life. Keep banging away about the UK, don't give up!

admysteltoe · 11/12/2008 09:34

I know I can feel a sort of time bomb ticking away inside me and my life is trickling through a massive egg timer - all the missed chances and wasted time. Still, other folk seem to cope with living here ...I shouldn't sa ythat because I could stab h with my carving knife when he says things like millions of Germans manage to live here happily why can't you. There must be a German gene, I'm sure of it.

thequietone · 11/12/2008 09:37

I need to go "Gah". Went to the Post Office this morning to buy stamps for the Christmas cards. My GOD - I spent nearly 50? on stamps! I decided to do homemade cards with DS1 this year. 40? on the card and envelopes, then even more on glitter glue and stamps etc.

I'm seriously not going to bother next year. 1.70? per card?

Huff puff...

finknottle · 11/12/2008 10:06

Millions of people live quite happily in the UK and (hundreds of) thousands emigrate every year.
Fatuous argument.
You're not happy, that's all that counts.
Stamp on his foot.

finknottle · 11/12/2008 10:08

TQO, I did that once.
So glad Germans aren't into Christmas cards, my mum was complaining about the madness of sending cards to neighbours she sees all the time, goes to the same Christmas parties as and invites to drinks etc.

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 11/12/2008 10:19

Admylin
I agree with Fink (as usual). In all the time that I have been posting on here, you have been unhappy in Germany. Look at Califrau, how much happier she was when they moved to the US. It is not a failure to admit that you don't like living in Germany. Not everyone does. I loved it, perhaps I would hate living in America.

Have to go pick up the kids. It has been snowing for days and today it got colder so it is finally lying. There is a fair bit of ice on the roads though.

finknottle · 11/12/2008 10:37

Good point, MmeLindt, we should put out a call for Califrau when dawn breaks yonder and get her to tell us all the grim details of her life here and enthuse about Ca.
Maybe in separate thread, don't want to frighten the horses.

Or we may have to resort to more brutal measures...

admysteltoe · 11/12/2008 10:51

I know all about cali, I joined mn a few months before she got the good news that she was leaving! She's one of my Vorbilder! I live in hope.

Thank goodness Germans don't do cards I agree! My neighbour saw me coming back from shopping and I showed her the cards I'd bought for home and I could see that look in her eye, you know the 'strange custom' raised eyebrow one.

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 11/12/2008 12:26

I have not sent any cards this year. Mum has been bugging me for weeks to do the normal big xmas production but I just can't be bothered don't have time

ImdreamingofawhiteGabster · 11/12/2008 21:04

Just doing my cards as we speak. Starting to wish had taken Lindt's attitude though. Oh well, 36 down, only another 22 to go .....

Admylin - at the end of the day if you are unhappy, then you are unhappy .... and I would just remind Dh that you are NOT german next time he says that.

Still no news on DHs job before anyone asks - hoping to hear tomorrow [nails bitten to quick emoticon]

admysteltoe · 12/12/2008 09:24

Morning. I set our new computer up last night. It is so nice to be able to go online and not have the page suddenly frozen and have to reboot and reboot for hours!

I've messed up the email configuration for sending photos from the myphoto files. Had to send a photo to h's email for his web page at work and it was 3MB! He was flat out on the sofa under his blanket giving out commandos when he has NO idea about configurations/programmes or anything computer related so I switched off in the end and went to watch TV (there was nothing on but I pretended it was something good)

Thank goodness it's weekend. Anything nice planned anyone? Weihnachtsmarkt again for me and dd, ds wants to stay home and h will be working. Sunday we're going into the forest to get sticks/twigs with the neighbour as she reckons she knows how to build a real bow and arrow set so we're making some for all the dc (mine and her dsd and granddaughter)

finknottle · 12/12/2008 10:31

Got bollocked on the phone last night by my mum for not having sent cards to The Aunts yet. Lucky I've time to eat atm. Always time for MN

Just spent 2 hrs at school preparing stuff. One of the teachers was singing, "I hate Christmas, I will be so happy when it's over, fa-la-la". I don't but shall be relieved to do only stuff for us next week. This weekend's stuffed-er than a Kelly Bronze turkey.

This afternoon: school party child 2
Tonight: school party child 1
Tomorrow morning: open day at school child 2
Tomorrow afternoon: school party child 3

Sunday afternoon: Ils for ye old Kaffee und Kuchen and updates on hypochondria and fair amount of sulking and sniffing as we're going to my parents for Christmas. We alternate but still, mine "win" as we stay there for so long

Think I may have to put in "Sunday morning: bottle of Glühwein before Ils"

Admylin I'd be sorely tempted to do target practice with a bow and (sharp) arrow on your h...

OP posts:
admysteltoe · 12/12/2008 10:50

Lol at target practise on h! Actually I am wondering why we are going to make these things for the dc because we're just going to forbid them to play with them afterwards.

Just had h on phone to tell me he got a new friend on facebook so that's what he does when he isn't in his lab.
