Books. And especially 3 for 2 like in Waterstones etc. I mean, yes I have heard of Amazon et al. But I object to paying as much for the postage as I do for the books (and it's a bit unecological). And we do have an American bookstore which has a lot of stuff that's not too expensive but I especially miss contemporary UK fiction and kids' books from my childhood for my kids... And he won't import from the UK because prices are too high.
Branston
Weetabix
Fish and chips (yes, I know, that is such a cliche)
Decent cheese (I love English blue cheeses such as Stilton etc). Polish cheese is just "yellow" and sooo boring, and in the delis you can get things like Brie, Gorgonzola etc but not good English cheeses
Snacks such as pies, pasties, scotch eggs etc like you can buy from UK newsagents', Boots, etc. for being on the hoof (though I am sure that this is one of the major contributors of UK obesity rates)
UK newspapers. The Guardian weekly was so not the same.

Amapoleon · 27/11/2008 11:54

I can't believe I am going to say this but I miss Donner Kebabs. I am very lucky that I live close to Gibraltar and can get most English foods should I fancy them.

I also miss Cauldron marinated tofu.

barbarianoftheuniverse · 27/11/2008 12:10

Briochedoree, runny honey and v dark sugar works for gingerbread. As does molasses if you can get it.

Cies · 27/11/2008 12:22

Foodwise I miss:
Marmite
Branston pickle
Marmalade
Golden syrup
Mixed Spice
Lots of other spices, particularly for curries
Cook in curry sauces
A huge variety of breads and cakes and scones and buns (I also can put on a kilo in very little time in the UK!)

Otherwise:
Newspapers (although nowadays with the internet this is less of an issue)
Boots and all its contents
Evans shoes (fat feet)
and, last but not least punctuality, but I doubt anyone is going to work out how to export that

Agree on the cheaper mags & also newspapers with all the sections

BriocheDoree · 28/11/2008 09:22

Thanks, barbarian was going to try something like that. Will give it a go. Dark sugar also a bit difficult in France but have found one fairtrade brand which is quite good. I suspect the French don't back much because the patisserie from the bakery is so good.
I also miss fish and chips.
And sausages and scotch eggs!

RoseOfTheOrient · 28/11/2008 09:35

expectant, you can get decent bread (not sweet, even with a pinch of salt) from swiss bake counters and at carrefour.

fleurdelacour, you will find superkingsize bedsheets/covers in Robinsons & Friven.
Agree about table lamps & bras. I'm still looking.

Hello Alexa M&S just opened a food section in great world city.

Sputnik · 28/11/2008 21:23

M&S knickers.
Hey everybody, you can read newspapers online these days you know

jessia · 28/11/2008 21:53

Of course you can, but do you? I'm a bit of a tactile person - I love that big wodge of a Saturday paper, the smell of it, the lazy flicking through the various supplements with my coffee... But hey, I'm not moving back to the UK for a paper...

francagoestohollywood · 28/11/2008 22:51

I do read the guardian on line, or at least I try to, but end up being sucked into mumsnet...

The saturday supplements used to last me for a whole week. Different sections were read on specific occasions: travel at breakfast, the guide when pretending to watch dvds with the children etc... (anal? mois??? )

slim22 · 29/11/2008 01:13

I know what I'm GOING to miss when I get to Australia next year - Bisto!
And lovely cheeses like Boursin,
and the wide range of G&B chocolate (they only have the basic ones)
