My mum wants an xmas list from me soon. I'm moving to NZ at the end of Jan so are there any little things that I am going to miss that I could ask for?

OP posts:
CorpseBrideOfJohnCusack · 08/10/2008 02:23

oh I had this openb for HOURS before I posted on it

you can get walkers crisps here somewhere - someone told me but I've forgotten where it was. Not the british shop, somewhere else (useful aren't I)

CorpseBrideOfJohnCusack · 08/10/2008 02:24

yes I remember that about the US - no paracetemol -v.strange

WhatSheSaid · 08/10/2008 02:30

I read the UK papers online (miss having a big paper to leaf through on Sundays though - Herald takes about 20 mins to read everything of interest)

www.theenglishcornershop.co.nz/ - one of the English food shops in Auckland. Delivers to South Island for 20 dollars an order. May be something similar in Christchurch?

Lots of English mags sold here if you're prepared to pay more/read ones a couple of months out of date. (I still get Heat sometimes ).

All of Boots would be nice. And a bigger variety of nice kids clothes.

ninedragons · 08/10/2008 02:33

The colour supplements from the weekend broadsheets. PILs have just been and left us their Guardian magazine and I am trying to string it out for as long as I can.

M&S socks. Most comfortable socks in the world, IMHO.

Think NZ is like Australia and pretty strict about people bringing food in, so any tea bags or things like that might be confiscated at the airport.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 08/10/2008 03:19

How wierd about the US no paracetamol thing. What do you have instead? Ibuprofen? Asprin?

Ah, I also miss Kew Retail Park, Boots and M & S.

I do find that I miss things less and less, I still miss people HUGELY of course but actual foodstuffs, I mostly have forgotten about. I even prefer Vegemite to Marmite now! Sacralidge I know.

Ozziegirly · 08/10/2008 03:19

The only things I've missed in Sydney are;

  1. Paxo stuffing
  2. L K Bennett
  3. M&S underwear and foodhall.
SuperBunny · 08/10/2008 03:28

We do have paracetamol in the US, it's just called acetominophen. You can buy it in tubs of 100 or more

My list usually includes:

Angel Delight
Branston Pickle
Marmite
Good Tea
Mincemeat/ mixed peel
Tartex
Crisps
Biscuits (Fox's creams, bourbons, custard creams)
Tunnocks Wafers

And now, underwear for DS. And some for me too - from M&S

SuperBunny · 08/10/2008 03:28

And socks for me.

MrsSprat · 08/10/2008 03:36

Milton tablets (mmmm tasty!)
Marigold Bouillon stock granules (ditto)

CorpseBrideOfJohnCusack · 08/10/2008 06:05

walkers crisps and benylin drowsy

Louise2004 · 08/10/2008 07:09

We regularly bring these over in our suitcases/duty free:

Pimms
Marmite
"real" Bacon
"real" Sausages
Mint Sauce
Bearnaise Sauce
Cheddar Cheese

Everything else we like and use can be found here (Moscow): Weetabix, Calpol, Lea & Perrins... Cheaper newspapers would be good but I tend to read these online now.

mumoverseas · 08/10/2008 08:28

In Saudi, the things we regularly bring are:
marmite (a good old favourite on here!)
packets of cheese sauce
chocolate buttons
tortillas
tampons (were banned by law here for years and can only just start getting them!)

often tempted to smuggle bacon but not worth the risk!

NorkyButNice · 08/10/2008 08:42

dodgykeeper - Tylenol is paracetamol, it's just called acetaminophen in the US.

Took me a while to realise that one too

Anna8888 · 08/10/2008 08:47

Dylash Eyelash Dye (not available in France but may be available in NZ)

quinne · 08/10/2008 11:00

This a selection of what we top our luggage allowance up with whenever we go home:-
Bacon
Weetabix
mixed herbs
curry powder
chinese/ thai spices
children's books (in english)
baked beans
newspapers
novels
calpol
piriton for children (very useful - maybe life saving - if you live somewhere with mosiquitoes)
paracetamol
DVDs - in english
hollandaise sauce
marmite
marmalade
salt and vinegar crisps
children's clothes (a new full wardrobe every six months aaagh!)
birthday cards to send to nephews and nieces back home

and with winter coming up:-
boxes of christmas cards
cranberry sauce
christmas pudding
whisky (for the christmas cake)
decoration for the xmas cake
toys - bigger range and cheaper in the UK plus made to EU standards

egypt · 08/10/2008 13:00

mumoverseas - i lived in saudi (riyadh) from 2000-02 and don't remember the tampon ban? really? how did i buy them then?? have truly blanked on this one.

SuperBunny · 09/10/2008 02:19

I have just gone through this thread and made a list for my mum. I bet she'll regret asking if I wanted anything!

hellish · 09/10/2008 02:21

Extra Stong Mints.
Orange squash

twentypence · 09/10/2008 02:28

You can get these things in Riccarton
Yorkshire Tea
Tetley Tea
All the lollies you can think of, except polo mints but it could just be they had run out
Birds custard (but why you would want to when there is Edmonds custard powder I don't know)
Entire range of Haribo
Walkers Crisps
Hula Hoops (though they don't taste the same without the MSG)
Hob Nobs
Digestives
Fairy Liquid
Bold Washing Powder
Hartleys cube jelly
Tate and Lyle (also in the international foods section in Woolworths)
Dandelion and Burdock
Britvic
marmite
Paxo

and you can get mooncups if you are interested.

I feel like I'm on a 70s quiz show remembering all that.

CorpseBrideOfJohnCusack · 09/10/2008 02:59

I've never felt the need to go to the shop in Riccarton so I really can't be missing much

I can't see how one could miss any sort of cakes/biscuits/scones etc when NZ have entire supermaket aisles dedicated to widest range of them that I have EVER seen.

got a mooncup from someone on trade me (I unfortunately fried mine

twentypence · 09/10/2008 04:21

Fried mooncup? With a full English or on toast?

I only went to the shop in Riccarton as someone had mentioned Dandelion and Burdock and I suddenly missed being a child and doind burdock burps and had to have a can.

Whilst I was there I made a mental inventory should anyone ever need it (which they did today - so it wasn't wasted!)

AphroditeInHerNightie · 09/10/2008 05:45

Ditto all of the above, but the things I really miss couldn't fit in a suitcase, they are:
-Primark
-Matalan

clothes here are really expensive, we have an M&S, Debenhams, Evans, Dottie P's, Next and Peacocks but they're really overpriced. They used to charge the Cypriot pound equivalent of sterling (ie £5 = £5Cyp) which was another 15-25% on the price, but now the Euro has come in they've hiked up the prices even further.
Thank goodness for the BFPO system, I get my mum to send stuff over, but you still can't try things on so returning them is a pain.

Rant over!
