Lentil Weaving in Dubai, and other questions...

Am going to start this thread in the hope that a Dubai Mumsnetter might wander past and be kind enough to advise (Starmummy? Morgan? Escape? Anyone?)

Am not really panicking about any of the following, just wondering really...

  1. I guess I won't be able to source Moltex nappies over there, and don't want to use huggies / pampers, so am planning to switch to cloth nappies. Any Dubai MNers have babies with cloth bottoms?
  1. Can I go running? Is it cool enough and safe enough early morning or evening?
  1. DP was wondering if people use motorbikes to beat the traffic (obv not in high summer), do they?

  1. No idea but you can get them in Qatar so would assume so
  1. Yes but not in the summer unless you go at 4am. From Oct - early May is do-able after that I find the sun too fierce. The traffic is a major consideration and I don't recommend running with headphones on.
  1. Yes they do but he'll need to factor in the heat and also the somewhat erratic driving skills here. Personally I wouldn't risk it.

Thank you Meowmix (good name btw.) Do you mean you can get Moltex in Quatar or you can get cloth nappies in Quatar?

wouldn't ridk the motorbike!
Started seeing alot more women out excersising around the safa park area now the kids are back at school - sort of feels a bit cooler, but the car still says 42!

have you posted on expat woman about the nappies - sure I saw athread fairly recently - if not ask away, plenty of lentil weavery types here.

BroccoliSpears · 09/09/2008 23:49

Thanks Escape. I can't seem to click with Expat Woman, but will give it another go because I'm sure once I get the hang of it it will be really useful.

I'm with you on EW. Its a bit odd.
the posters aren't particularly humourous and their will never be any intellectual debate - BUT it is great for factual information..
Where can I get X,
who delivers y to Z etc,
so ask away about the nappies because I wouldn't have a clue

foxytocin · 12/09/2008 00:16

Can i be nosey broc. and ask when are you moving out there? It seems like I am on my way to Abu dhabi in early Dec. Will have a dd1 3.7 yo in tow and a 3mo old too.

i already committed to cotton nappies from before the plans to move came about. I can only smile at how quickly they'll dry.

BroccoliSpears · 12/09/2008 15:53

Will be there in about 10 weeks time. November. Am quite excited, if a little nervous! How are you feeling?

I have another question, if anyone in the know is passing: craft stuff. I have a big drawer of craft stuff for my 2-year-old. Will cheerfully donate the lot to my toddler group if I can replace it easily and cheaply out there. Would prefer to bring it along with the other stuff we're shipping over if it's expensive to replace. Advice?

OP posts:
escape · 13/09/2008 06:50

yes to craft stuff
don't forget how close we are to the far east - a lot of stuff comes very cheaply!!
There is even a dedicated scrapbooking shop just opened.
Do you know what though,
Why not just bring everything. If you've got the container space.
If anything is surplus when you get here, get rid of it then

Starmummy · 14/09/2008 15:22

Lol at lentil weaving!

Its a bit fur coat and bling in Dubai, having said that we have the organic cafe with an organic clothes shop attached (new dubai end of town)they must do cloth nappies. Ds is a bit old for nappies (13!) so I dont know much about that but I can certainly ask and come back to you. Lots of mums and tots, bumps and babes groups so plenty of opportunities to get out and about in that respect.

Crafts, a few shops sell absolutely loads of stuff and it is cheap, however if you can fit it in bring it as escape says.

Plenty safe enough for running wouldnt particularly recommend the roads, drivers are completly MAD! However there are parks, and the areas like Meadows, Arabian Ranches etc have lake areas. DS does his running around there from back roads within each comminity area. Do remember it is very hot even over night, currently its about 33 at night, Dont go anywhere without water, even the car, there are always traffic jams.

Expatwoman is ok, they just get a bit bored and start sniping at each other . They do have a breast feeding group in DXB. The site is currently down for a revamp due back up on Monday, more likely Tuesday as this is Dubai and nothing happens on time ;-)

Motorbikes, my friends husband has one, they go for long rides on a Friday morning 5am sort of thing as its too hot later. They have just done a 36 hour trip to somehwere nonstop. Big club of them. As for going to work, dont know what your DH does but he will be mighty sweaty even in so called winter. And the traffic is mad (again). Wouldnt recomend it personally.

Any other questions ask away.

BroccoliSpears · 14/09/2008 19:29

Oh thank you both of you - lots of info.

Will ask more as I think of it .

OP posts:
BroccoliSpears · 20/09/2008 21:51

Right. Am sorting out the children's clothes now.

Is there any point in bringing lined trousers? Is it too hot?

Wellies?

Waterproofs?

Jumpers and cardigans? Will bring a couple of warmer things of course, but am thinking that just transplanting their Yorkshire wardrobe to UAE isn't going to be completely helpful. What to weed out?

OP posts:
Starmummy · 29/09/2008 09:19

LOL at lined trousers, it was 35 degrees at 7.30am this morning when I took Dh to work.

Seriously bring the stuff that will last them if you think you will be going back in the winter. Otherwise shops are full of wool coats . Went to get DH some shorts yesterday, none anywhere except board shorts, and thats not really a good look for DH.
School uniforms include a jumper, generally because the AC is freezing.

Wellie boots if you have space (but only if you really do have the space, like really really do) becuase it does run on the very odd occassion and all the kids (big and small) run out to play in the rain. Some very littlies are confused as they have never seen rain. You can always pass on wellies. DS has one posh going out jumper and a hoodie (god forbid) for wearing to ski Dubai. I brought Ds walking boots but he has only worn then once despite having camped in the mountains on numerous occassions. So if the kids are growing out of them, dont bother you're not likely to get much wear out of them. Even the school trips to Dibba (they all go to the same place) dont need them. But, I hesitate here to say this, you will need crocs, you can get them here but all the kids wear them for the park, pool, beach etc.

You will need summer cardies, jumpers and wraps (you can get all that here if its not something you ever had in your wardrobe before.

Umm if you have anything posh bring it, because there are loads of balls, the Dubai World cup, brunches, dinners etc that all let you dress up as much or as little as you like.

DS has a few pairs of jeans for in the malls, it depends on how he feels shorts or jeans. Waterproofs as in a top will be ok, Ds has worn his for wind chill when sailing and for protection whenyou get sandblasted.
