we're sitting at the back of the ever-lengthening emigration queue (well, not quite at the back - we've been on it a while) but dh has been (almost) offered two jobs (he only needs to formalise his interest) which would make it possible in a much shorter timescale...
the difficulty is, dd2 has sn and may be medically inadmissible for permanent residence... which is why we chose to go the long slow route initially...
help?
would you go for it or not?
i am utterly torn!
he rang me last night and said 'do i want a job?'
aaargh! i don't know!

Oooh, what is your username and I'll reply to one of your threads - should make you feel better!!

Three job offers sounds like a dream come true to me. As far as DH leaving you in GB, I would be really reluctant. The strain on you and him will be immense. I've no idea of the legal implications though - Andrew Miller would be the one to ask in the immigration section. If you put his name in the thread title he should respond.

ALberta is not the prairie. silly foreigner!

I would think that your DH's company (whichever one he decides to go with) would pay for healthcare and bluecross. Maybe that's something you should take into consideration when deciding which one to go for. you should get medical cover and dental as well.

what was all that space and tumbleweed then? but no, not the real big scary stuff - that was a bit further... and i'm nowhere near that brave! it was bad enough watching the dog sail off into nothingness chasing the damn silly arctic hare things (that were just as big as she was) and digging for flipping gophers... when they would just pop up behind her and squeak knowingly... dh would say 'she'll come back eventually' with me thinking she's gone off to join the coyotes... yes, quite enough space for me, any more and i'd have been a basket case!

callisto - you're probably right - but a part of me thinks it might be the most sensible if we know it's short term - we're used to him working away quite a bit anyway - maybe not for quite such a length of time!

i'm debbiem on there. had an interesting pm chat with a guy who went out on twp with his family (had a son with cp) but they decided to come back and not apply for pr - nothing to do with his son, just general cultural stuff, he's spent 3 years getting there and came back within six months, so the one contact i thought would be useful has disappeared... really interesting that some people invest so much of their life and then change their minds, but i guess that's life.

I think that people don't do enough research, which is mad considering that moving to a different country is such a huge undertaking (though I went to Italy on a whim having done exactly zero research - I was young and foolish then but luckily loved the country and people). I also think that six months isn't enough. You've got to give it a year at the very least. I shall look you up on Expats, hope you get the answers you need.

Hi there, I'm in Toronto at the moment and for what it's worth - my DH came out for a month initially, got his TWP for 12 months, then flew back for me and DD once accommodation was sorted. I got a spousal work permit, no problem at immigration. However, it's only valid as long as he works here and expires at the same time as his. I'm sure your DH's employer are set up to deal with all the legal stuff - loads of expats in Calgary for the oilsands. Do they have a relocation-assistance team who can help with the health stuff.

I've got a four month 'holiday' insurance policy to cover health issues to start with.

thanks mrssprat! that's really interesting as i suspect that's the route we will take. dh has confirmed that the company have a really good legal side who have done the UK bit loads of times, so that's reassuring. i think he may go out early spring (depending on him making a decison and paperwork lol) and we would follow next summer when school was out (there's no way we could do the turnaround for this sept - i think twp is taking about 8 weeks at the mo). dd2 needs to start at the beginning of the school year to catch the assessment and funding period for her sn... it's be easier if we'd done it this year as she'd go into kindergarten, but don't think it's going to happen now, so grade one it'll be...

callisto - obv no-one on expats wanted to talk to me until you had given your 'seal of approval', so thanks for kicking it into action lol! (i did get told off by judy though - eek)
