VPN to watch British TV overseas - ?

Alphabetsoups · 30/03/2026 13:45

Has anyone used a VPN to watch British TV whilst overseas?
I'm looking at the Amazon 16GB Fire Stick 4K Max + Nord VPN.
Too faffy? I'm not afraid of tech but I don't want endless hassles ...
?
TIA

I've used Proton VPN to watch live TV on Pluto TV from the US while in the UK via a Google TV stick.

It's perfectly legal and very easy to set up and watch.

I'm sure it works the same way when watching UK TV while abroad.

We use Surfshark. Have found it much more stable than Nord.
We run multiple Firesticks with all the UK streaming apps on them

I use CyberGhost on my phone and ipad. Havent attempted a smart tv set up.

We use Nord VPN and we watch TV from all over the world, not just the UK. Firesticks on all our TVs (sadly no RTE app for Firestick though...). Occasionally we have to disconnect and reconnect to the VPN when the TV apps get stuck (i.e. when we forget to return to the home page) but it takes seconds.

We use Express VPN on our devices (and have a firestick for the TV) ... the VPN stuff is really easy, but I would check with people already living there which VPN they use and whether you have to set it up on devices before entering the country. Where I live there are some VPNs which have been blocked by the ruling party (including Nord) as technically using a VPN is banned, which is why you cant just move here THEN decide you want a VPN - you have to get it all set up before you leave, then it is plain sailing in the most part.

We found that Disney really disliked us using VPNs (as it is not available here, so we cancelled it) and we also can't use the Channel 4 app. However the latest series of GBBO is released on US Netflix the day or so after in the UK so we just watch it on there instead.

So I think we have Norton, but there's no suitable app for the tv, so I just watch stuff on my iPad.

Some providers have very strict geoblockers, and for ages I couldn't watch C4 and 5, but the simple way round this is to change your device time to UK. My iPad is therefore set to gmt and it works perfectly.

Have you tried switching the time to UK? That worked for me, for C4.

I still pay for my tv licence (have house in UK still) so it annoys me when I get blocked.

I am in Spain and use NordVPN which mostly works fine on a fire stick. Sometimes I get blocked as the streaming services I watch detect the IP addresses as coming from a VPN provider, but this is usually temporary as nord buys new blocks of IP addresses. There are ways around the blocks - I clear out the app cache nd force quit it then switch to a different server in the app and things work again. I have all the streaming services available in the UK.

I haven't but we mostly watch stuff on the main tv and tbh the only thing we religiously watch on C4 is GBBO which we have a work around for, but useful to know, thanks. We also have Prime too so tbh we dont need an extra thing for our primary aged child to start watching!!

We also still pay the licence fee (although rent our London house out) so like you I dont feel bad about using iplayer.

I used to subscribe to FilmOn, but didn't renew last year as they changed their Ts&Cs. It did enable me to watch and record all UK channels that I wanted as well as some others. However, at the time, there was no catch up, so I needed to record anything I wasn't able to watch live.
I now use Nord VPN with iPlayer and can also get Channel 4 and Channel 5 (which I very rarely watch).
Every now and again (about once a week) I have to clear all my history, which can be tiresome, but it generally works well. I have also watched from Asia, but didn't bother changing the device time.
A colleague recommended Nord VPN as he used it to watch UK tv in Italy and in Germany.

oberuber · 21/04/2026 01:45

We use Nord VPN.

Squiillionaire · 27/04/2026 00:05

Why do you want to? I know people are going to disagree but if you move to another country you watch TV from that country. Unless you want to be those English people who are so insular they try and be English in a foreign country.

cardboard33 · 28/04/2026 08:12

@Squiillionaire where I live, I cannot get the TV from my "host" country - the houses do not have aerials and to watch anything local online requires entering a document that I do not have as a "foreign" resident. Even if I did have that document, I would also need to register my TV at customs at the airport, pay a "tax" at another location (as we did not buy our TV in country) and then I may possibly be able to access the local TV network, when most of the locals I know also use VPNs to access international news and media.

And if you have "only" watched the local television networks (in languages that you are learning but can't understand enough to watch tv in it) when living overseas, and never accessed streaming services such as Netflix or Prime with a young family then well done you for being so culturally assimilated.

BeringBlue · 28/04/2026 23:08

@Squiillionaire I speak multiple languages to varying degrees and like to watch TV in all those. If I can watch Channel 4, for example, I can watch TV in those languages but with English subtitles (English subtitles are not an option where I live).
I read books in English too. Should I only be reading books in the language of the country I live in, or listen to local radio all the time?
