I qualify as mental health nurse next year.

Dp is keen to go to Australia to live (as if its just as easy as moving to coventry).

For a while I have been non-plussed by the idea, but must admit that most recently I have warmed to the idea.

Can anyone give any advice on this branch of nursing in Australia- or any advice on emigrating there at all.

I would be a Mental Health Nurse.
Dp is a regional manager for a car hire company- not sure if Australia is crying out for his skills...

hi.. im an adult nurse and have recently moved to brisbane.
i have friends who are mental health nurses, both work in adelaide, and another friend who qualified last year and is planning on returning to bris, next year who is a mental health nurse.
basically mental health nursing is about 10 years behind the uk... i find that everything is abouut the same on the adult side, biggest thing which is more comical than anything is that the drugs all have brand names.. simple example is paracetamol is panadol! etc... so that still throws me.
there are lots of mental health avenues here but depening on when and how you would want to come to aus? have you been on holiday before.. thats well worth it. Do you have an end elective placement. i did my final placement over here at a fab hospital, i know that i got offered a job that because i have had another baby since arriving i havent worked again yet! but there are loads of job options. te hospital i am wating to work at locally has a big mental health branch. goggle.. pine rivers private hospital. its just a small hospital but part of a big private chain.
i think if you dont do an elective here to get your foot in the door so to speak just about everyone will want 12 months experience, and to apply for perm res you will need 12 months experience unless a company sponser you.
hope that is some food for thought.

Hi you need to look on each individual states nursing board, sorry cant do links, maybe chloeb2002 can help with that, and as she said you really should have post qualifying experience here so that you can build on your skills in a familiar environment.

All states are crying out for nursing staff and there are usually information days in major cities in the UK where you can go for some info. You also have to be registered in Australia to practice and their year runs from June I think.
Your best bet would be to look into a state sponsorship if you have not been out before as this gives you some security to come back home without incurring to many costs, as many will pay for you to go out.

Nursing pay is much lower than the UK, however so is the cost of living at the moment.
I would narrow down where you would want to go and start the search in that area. Remember you can be interviewed while in the UK for sponsored jobs.

Good luck.
