Would you move abroad again

Can anyone give me a steer if you have been an expat would you consider relocating back abroad again after coming back home with kids for a short term but extremely lucrative contract? Is it worth upsetting routines etc again or staying put and forgetting about the money.

We did LD for two years post Covid. No problem at all. Saw each other every two months or so for a week

One thing to really work through is the tax implications - namely if you don't stay out of the UK for a full tax year then you are liable for UK tax on your earnings - this led me to having to stay in Dubai for 18 months having initially wanted to stay for a year tops

This is what I said earlier but OP seemed to say it was all covered 🤷‍♀️

Are you saying you lived in Dubai previously and have been offered a lucrative role there? If my kids were still in primary school, I would go in a heartbeat.

Ae did long distance for 8 months the other way round and that was probably the maximum amount if time we could have tolerated as we are a close family who don’t do very well being apart

You mean you want your kids to get the advantage of a UK education but don't want to contribute to the UK tax system that pays for it. The description of people like you is PARASITE

Truetoself · 28/11/2025 19:47

@Somersetbakerin the same token should people whose kids attend private schools, don’t take student loans ( which for the vast majority are written off) and use private healthcare get some kind of rebate?

Seelybee · 29/11/2025 18:20

@HighFive299 I think you'll find UK tax will be payable if out of the country for less than 3 years. Also the bureaucracy involved in setting yourselves up as a family in the UAE for a matter of months could be disproportionate. Much simpler for the employed person to go and make frequent trips home, there are lots of public holidays and long weekends are doable.

kids are rarely unsettled for long - it's more likely to be trailing spouses who suffer. Go for it!

HighFive299 · 30/11/2025 19:08

Thanks all really appreciate the different perspectives (especially being called a parasite lol). Lots of votes to send spouse off so maybe that's more sensible@curious79 fair point also

LD totally manageable so long as your relationship is sound and you both agree on using at least some of the renumeration in providing support for you. An extra pair of hands, outsource laundry, cleaning etc.

The problem on a longer timescale is to have to do without perks you have become accustomed to. Retaining those perks can get expensive

LD for us also depended a lot on how much autonomy the ‘traveller’ had in picking their travel schedule and who pays for it.
