Hi
my daughter has a host family , contract etc to au pair in Germany and would like to go asap. Today she had an appointment at the German embassy in Manchester for a work visa but she need a different visa so was turned away.
she had called and emailed ahead but no one will help. She has emailed the London office who reply with an automated response with the link to the page and the phone number had a message to say they cannot help with applications.
she only wants to know which is the correct box to tick as au pair is not an option and there is nothing remotely similar.
anyone from uk working as au pair in Germany or have a family member who is who may be able to help?

I'm afraid it would have been good for her to do a bit more research on this topic before getting in touch with a family in the EU. There is no such thing as an au pair visa and the whole scheme allowing young British people to work as au pairs in the EU was abolished, especially post-Brexit. Unfortunately unless your DD has an EU passport it's just not possible unless she goes to work as an au pair illegally for 6 months.

To confirming what the PP explained, no one at the embassy can help because there is no longer any such time as an au-pair visa.

Another so called ‘benefit of Brexit’

Not really so very surprising that the embassy does not have anyone responsible for explaining this to any applicants who do not appear to be aware of this significant change in arrangements.

But they can work in Switzerland. It would require the host family to use an agency on their side to sort the paperwork, and an au pair visa would be issued by a local government office so long as the au pair commits to so many hours of language lessons a month, and a few other conditions.

Are you sure that is still the case? Permits seem increasingly hard to come by.

Certain.
