Teaching in Singapore

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to start applying for jobs at some of the more established British/international schools. Can anyone give me a realistic outlook as what teaching in Singapore (primary) is like. Lifestyle/kids/accommodation/work life balance etc

I taught in Singapore 25 years ago, so too long ago to be useful really, but I absolutely loved it. There are some excellent international schools and I learnt so much from colleagues from different backgrounds. Loved teaching children from all over the world and working with their families. Singapore is a fantastic place to live, I made lovely friends and enjoyed swimming outdoors, running, the wildlife and greenery, amazing food and incredible travel opportunities.

The work life balance was great - much better than in UK schools - we worked hard but had so much more time and spare cash to socialise and travel. I don't remember working at weekends. Parental expectations were high (but manageable). I was young and single and we were given an accomodation allowance, which covered sharing a flat with a colleague with some left over for travel. Our flat was great - in a small condo complex with a pool, not far from school. Public transport is great, most teachers didn't run a car (v expensive to do).

Which schools are you looking at? Good luck!

Make sure you get offered a decent package, and the initial moving in and getting set up costs will be very high. Don't expect a large villa there either, a tiny flat is much more common and will cost an eye-watering amount. Imagine zone 1 in London prices.

I wouldn't fancy the climate. Rain almost every day for a couple of hours and hot and humid for most of the year.
