If you had a chance to leave the UK would you?

Hey,

Considering a move to the Channel Islands (probably Jersey).

Although rent/ living costs are high it will put us in the best possible financial position (mainly thinking about the kids futures - money wise).
Kids are 8, 11 and 14.

Feel like the UK doesn't have much to offer now and will only get worse when the kids are older.

Just interested in what other people think? Would you leave if you had a good opportunity for a life somewhere else?

I don’t speak any other languages so would have to be English speaking. Australia and NZ are too far. Don’t fancy USA so no. I like the UK.

I'm also thinking Scotland if Farage gets in, realistically I can't move overseas.. I'm too old. (Although I would love to live in an EU country, don't speak any languages though). Scotland is progressive where England is not. Plus they're more likely to rejoin the EU

Scotland progressive? You’re so wrong. It’s much less progressive and will never be back in the EU.
Also do tight know what’s being going on with women’s rights in Scotand?

@Makehaysunshine

Well I disagree. Scotland is not falling for the far right propaganda that we are currently seeing here in England.

It is also very likely that if England was crazy enough to elect someone like Farage Scotland would then fight hard for its independence and to rejoin the EU.

I am very happy where I live in England, a lovely seaside town in the south east but I would not want to live under a poisonous, far right government. The England I love is the one that fought hard against Fascism during the war. Once it forgets what it stands and fought for, then it would be lost as a nation.

DH has lived permanently overseas for the last ten years for work - two European countries, one ‘long haul.’ He can’t wait to come back home which is the same for most people he works with. He’s spoken the language in both European countries, had a good network of friends and colleagues and had a great social life but in terms of what the countries have to offer…not much.

Grass is always greener on the other side and all that.

Thanks for the replies!

I can work in Jersey as have skills they can't recruit for on the Island, so that means we will have no housing restrictions.
Despite rent & cost of living being higher we will be able to stash quite a bit of money each month due to 20% tax, & having a couple of small properties here in the UK that we can rent out.

It seems safe, clean & the beaches are beautiful.

It might not be a forever move but I think it'll be a good plan for now. If we stay for 10 years the kids will also be able to live & work there with no restrictions when they're adults, so I like the idea of them having the option.

But young people are haemorrhaging out of Jersey, because of lack of housing and career opportunities. I mean, I wouldn’t stay ten years with the idea that you’re doing them a favour.

We are going to have to because there will be no financial incentive for us to stay here. We will keep a base here and be back very regularly to see our family/friends but the way things are going, they won’t be hanging around too long either.

Yes, and I plan to. Once the kids have flown the nest!

Sure. And of course they can leave anytime. Always nice to have options than not though!!

100% if the right opportunity comes along. Lived in London since I was 2, never ever thought I would leave here; but now for the right opportunity, we would.

Papyrophile · 02/09/2025 17:32

We were thinking about it for financial reasons, but have decided against, mainly because DH has had a few severe health crises, and I prefer to deal with medical professionals in my mother tongue.
