Retirement - where's a good UK base

Hello

We're long term expats (I'll give you three guesses where based on the username), looking to retire in about 10 years. Realistically, we'd want to have a base somewhere in the UK (spending more and more time there as we get older) but aren't tied to any particular location. I'm really struggling on how to make the decision of where. There is no clear 'home' in the UK for either me or DH - there are places that we spent considerable amounts of time as children, and places we visit regularly because parents are based there, but nowhere that we'd have an established network of friends/family in place (family are disbursed around the UK/world).

Assuming not London/South East because looking to keep house prices and cost of living low(er), does anyone have any suggestions of areas to start thinking about? Or even good sources for information rather than me going into Rightmove flights of fancy?

Criteria are:
(1) 3 bed (but ideally three double, two bath) house for under GBP500k, ideally more like GBP400 (assuming prices will increase over the next few years). Some form of garden, off street parking, but doesn't have to be detached. I like older houses (but might not actually want this if I'm thinking of old age an maintenance!). Some form of view. I'd love to be rural but given the other criteria anticipating that's probably not going to happen.
(2) Good transport links including public transport easy access to a decent sized town/city that has options for restaurants, theatre, cinema etc.
(3) Access to (NHS) healthcare i.e. not an hour from the nearest decent hospital.
(4) A community that is likely to be welcoming to outsiders and ideally multicultural/otherwise open minded.

I grew up in the Yorkshire golden triangle, and actually that would be ideal but not sure how I feel about going back to my childhood 'home' area. Plus possibly too little Britain?

... although you might struggle for house prices a bit actually?!

Derbyshire, Matlock, Bakewell around those areas

I find it amusing that you’re worried about Tory voters as you vote Labour.

Has it not occurred to you that supporting, either directly or indirectly, a regime such as the one in Dubai, speaks volumes about your own values and may make both Labour and Tory voters feel you aren’t their type?

Why not find out where aging Dubai ex-pats go and follow them there. That’s probably your best bet for finding your tribe and will be more important than location.

I live in York and belong to a choir with quite a few people who have retired there from elsewhere. It seems from what they say that they have found it a great place to come to. They’ve got thriving social lives and are really enjoying life. (My choir itself is a very chilled one with a variety of ages in and attracts people who don’t like a lot of formality.)

Go and be sanctimonious on someone else's thread please. I know your type and I know you don't actually have a clue what you're talking about. You just want to start a fight.

Thats unecessary and unpleasant

I think the Midlands is hugely underrated. I dont live there and not from there but we love it there, good transport links, lots of cities to choose from, not far from anywhere else in the country really, lovely scenary and outdoors stuff, cheaper property.

I would like to retire there I think

Of course. York is very overcrowded now and locals pushed out.

Have you considered Nottinghamshire? Around the Newark/more rural areas around there is absolutely beautiful and on a great connection on the trains to London.

HuaShan · 26/10/2024 14:51

I agree, the Midlands is very underrated. Litchfield is a nice town, as is Leamington Spa. Or nearer to Manchester what about Macclesfield - some lovely villages not far outside and great train links to Manchester.

Lismore does have a point. You're being sneery about "Little England" and Tories whilst choosing to work in Dubai.

What makes you think you've got the moral high ground?

Dubaiinception · 26/10/2024 16:50

Thanks to everyone on this thread who has been helpful. I'm signing off because the usual Dubai haters have come along to insult me.

As soon as I read the description I thought Harrogate. Has everything you asked and it isn't as stuck up as rep will have told. Up the road to Lba and we flew from Manchester this week. Wasn't too bad
