Hi I am moving to Brussels this autumn with my husband and 15 month old. We are looking for a house or apartment and thinking of chatelain, woluwe st Pierre, Etterbeek, woluwe st lambert or Auderghem. Any advice on area would be greatly appreciated. Also the energy ratings on houses and apartments are really poor. Why is this? Are people living in cold homes as a result. Thank you

Hi, how did the move go? I was considering posting a similar question here but see you have had no response. I might be moving to brussels after the summer with 3 young children. Any advice on location and schools? I need to be downtown 3 days per week for work but would like to live near the kids school somewhere we could have at least a small garden. Safety is also a concern. Any advice greatly appreciated!

I've worked in Brussels for over 20 years, 10 of which I lived in Brussels (now live just outside). I could give you some guidance, but maybe you could clarify how old your kids are? And what do you mean by downtown? That concept doesn't exist here. Where will you be working? Do you already have a school picked out (i.e. international school/European school) or would you be putting your kids in a local school? Most of Brussels is pretty safe - there are some areas a bit more urban/scruffy than others (mostly north/northwest). Many expats choose to live in the south/southeast suburbs like Ixelles, Etterbeek, WSL, WSP, Auderghem. Gardens are quite hard to come by in some areas of the city - again depends a bit on your rental budget....
