this nis a long shot but we have friends who are desperate to move to aus.. preferably brisbane but they have cousins in sydney so that an option too.. he works as a very experienced prison officer (correctional officer) with young offenders. He deals with the ultimate worst ones.. the ones that have murdered and raped people ... i know nice job eh! but either there are no such people in aus... i hope... or he just cant find the right way in? he is over the magic 45 years by a little bit but just cant seem to get anywhere. Does anyone have any prison links? friends who are prison officers etc? long shot but he could do with some advice really. He is flying out at the end of april to see what he can achieve face to face but needs to find faces first!
he also is qualified in health an safety stuff for the building industry and drives big trucks... seems amazing that he cant get a foot in the door.
His wife is a manager for tescos but likewise although under the magic 45 tescos training is all inhouse so scores no points.
not good. any suggestions greatly appreciated!!!
thanks

i know they may want Sydney or Brisbane BUT if he has done the building industry and truck thing - perhaps West - Perth etc.

Perhaps he could apply to Corrections department direct - I Know there were ads for some in the insert from Sat's COurier Mail this weekend.

Unless he can find someone to sponsor him I think Sydney is probably not an option as a first stop. I know it changes all the time and we went through the visa process in January '07 but for Sydney you not only had to be on the "occupations in demand" list, but you also had to be on the "Sydney list". Most of the people we have met in Sydney as new arrivals have either been on business visas or work in IT (like DH).

It is easier to get in if you are willing to work in other states for a certain period of time, so that might be the way to go. I would think that an agent would be the best place for your friends to start - they will normally do an initial assessment for free. Unfortunately it does get a lot harder once you hit 45. Have a look on the BritishExpats website - it's full of useful, practical advice for people who want to emigrate.

There is a shortage of police officers in Qld, don't know if that could be a way in? Contacting the Corrections dept like Eidsvold said, might also be helpful. The BritishExpats website is very good, really helpful and so many people there who have looked into different ways of moving here.

Long shot, and I know it isn't in QLD or NSW, but you could try Victoria
