Container shipping

Anyone who has shipped their belongings overseas - did you take out insurance for all or part of your belongings?

Torn as to what to do, if I insure all of my belongings it will be the cost as the shipping.

What are the risks of the container going overboard? I asked a couple of companies and they were quite cagey about it and said they didn’t have the stats etc.

Insurance was part of the moving package and sorted by the container company. We didn’t have to do it ourselves.

Normally insurance is a maximum of 2% of the value of your items. If not included.

When I moved overseas, I opted for insurance just in case, especially since the cost was similar to the shipping itself.

Yes I insured it all. Mad not to. It's not about the likelihood of it happening, it's about the impact it does. Almost everything I I owned was in those containers.

We insured it all

Why is it the same cost? Yes, I absolutely did insure it.

I suppose if it's just half a container with your personal items on then it would be OK but if it's everything you own from a cheese grater to a barbecue then it's going to cost a fortune to replace.

The peace of mind was worth it. As for the risks, while companies might not provide specific stats, accidents can happen at sea. It's a personal decision based on your comfort level with risk. You could get quotes for container shipping.
I ended up insuring all my belongings because I couldn't bear the thought of losing everything. The cost was high, but knowing my items were protected was a huge relief. As for the risks of the container going overboard, it's rare but not impossible. I decided it was better to be safe than sorry.

Yes but we used Letton Percival (on the recommendation of many others) as opposed to the shippers own insurance.
