How many of us ( in Aus) have been voted in to P and F or P and C roles??

Pick me - went along to school for the AGM of the parent group. Thinking it would be good to find out how it all works, what they do - knowing I could not take a position as they meet on a night that dh has a very important prior commitment.

So - meeting progresses - having trouble filling positions - my friend and I ( as new parents) were asked if we would like to be involved. I declined saying I would not be able to attend any further meetings due to dh's commitment. Well - they only go and change the night. So I now have a position on the Parent and Citizen's group!!!

Anyone else? or just me the sucker

actually I am pleased - I like to be involved and was feeling a little let down I could not due to dh's commitment BUT now I can and am looking forward to being involved for the next however many years - about 12 years or so

sorry meant to add - I had firm instructions to stop my friend from taking on a role - she is already very involved in a parent support group - so she kindly offers to nominate for anything I want to do!! thanks friend !

Have thought about it Eidsvold but haven't managed to get to any meetings Also had a fear of being 'volunteered'......
Am helping out at the Fete/Fair later in the year though, an dh helped with some gardening last year so not entirely avoiding jobs

eidsvold · 24/03/2008 03:31

Scully - I was just wondering if anyone else had gotten involved or if it was just me.

Dh helps out like that - if he can with one offs - due to work and other commitments that he has.

Our committee decided not to have a fete this year as it seemed so few people volunteered on the day and it was a lot of work for little return.

no will admit i havn't become involved in the p and c.. mostly because i tyhink i may be just a little to opin onated and having rocked the boat allready with the school thoughtid better keep my head down well below the shot level. I also dont agree with some of teh ethos of teh p and c. did buy easter eggs from them and dd gets a cookie wevry weeek from tuck shop but dont think the tuck shop should fund the school.. $4.50 a sandwich is just too much etc.. so best out of it.
I have signed up to be classroom aide once a week so thats my contribution.

mymama · 27/03/2008 01:26

Just you eidsvold .

Your story = me 5 years ago when dd was in year 1. Scored myself the P&C Secretary position. Did it for one year.

Was a real eye opener and a valuable experience.

Made me realise the principal was not child friendly and the school would never get the things it needed as he had an agenda of his own.

We moved schools the next year.

I help in the classroom and cafe now (our school is too posh for a tuckshop).

eidsvold · 27/03/2008 06:14

oh yes - I think you can learn a lot about a place from its parent committee. I just feel I send my kids to the local school and they need to see that I support and help out where I can - as part of a community.

I wish I could do classroom bits and pieces but I have the other two dds so I can't really do that.

Hard with younger ones.

This is my first year I can help out as ds2 is at kindy two days a week.

Which position did you get?

sunnydelight · 28/03/2008 02:38

I'd quite like to get involved, but as it's a Christian school I think they might like Committee members to at least attend church

I have plenty of time though - DD just started in the pre-school this year. I really love the fact that all three of my kids (the boys are Y3 and Y9) attend the same school here so it feels like we are all part of the same community.

eidsvold · 28/03/2008 03:23

can I be somewhat vague and say one of the executive positions.

I am looking forward to dd2 at least being in kindy and my mum being retired so perhaps I can help out for a bit.

Me too Eidsvold. I'm the uniform secretary at my DS2's kinder and have just been cajoled into joining the school council. Found out I was elected last week.

I work full-time. I'm nackered!

dejags · 28/03/2008 06:34

Hi Eidsvold

Can you tell me what P&F and P&C stand for please. I assume it's similar to the governing body of the school - I would most certainly like to become involved at this level very soon after arriving (9 weeks tomorrow!!!!)

I was hoping to get involved as much as possible in the DS's school - mostly as a way to get integrated into the community and make some friends asap. Do parents routinely do tuckshop, reading bee, classroom assistant duties etc in Aus?

arfishy · 28/03/2008 06:54

Yes, what is P&C? Is it the same as the PTA?

I when I found out that our class PTA rep just was named without consultation or requests for help from the PTA.

Although I think our PTA is highly suspect anyway. It's all very masonic.

I think I got off on the wrong foot when putting the name to the face at a party I said "oh! so you're the form captain then!". I have a feeling I have to stay on-side with Mrs-nominated-in-undemocratic-manner and have been sucking up ever since. I don't want my cakes nobbled on the PTA cake stall for the next 12 years, that's for sure.

eidsvold · 28/03/2008 07:31

p and F is parents and friends ( usually used by private schools - not always)

P and C is parents and citizens

Dejags - things like tuckshop, uniform shop, parent reps ( as we call them arfishy) ours is usually approached by class teacher after a few weeks - you know those that show involvement and desire for that sort of thing.

classroom assistants, reading tutors, that sort of thing dejags.

LOL at arfishy - did you do it in a jolly hockey sticks tone !!

First day on tuesday playing with the small people... i am dreading it just a bit now... DD is very excited and has a new lease of life since the GO told her she was very smart and then implemeneted officaly extra support and structure for DD. Now reading proper books in class and writing, even getting words to learn in the way of spellings so she carries on learning. the latest letter from the dept was far more along the lines of following disscussions between yourself and the go the decsion has been made to keep dd in prep. She scored 120 in the iq test! so academically they couldnt argue about a move up to grade one. but given the choice to leave her be and give her extra support in prep hopefully will be better long term... for sports and uni decsions etc. will ahve the option to miss grade one if we choose to the GO will re asses in novemeber and draw a plan for the next year.
