I KNOW how much you all love hearing stories like this, so I thought I would tell you about what I saw when driving out of the supermarket car park today

DD was chattering away as we were inching out of the supermarket carpark today - behind a row of cars also leaving.
The car in front was being driven by a dear looking old lady. As DD was chatting to me from the back seat my attention was caught by a movement on the roof of the old lady's car.
I thought it was a leaf.
It wasn't.
When I peer forward to take a better look (murmuring agreeable sounds to DD "really darling?" that sort of thing) I saw that is was a FARKING HUGE HUNTSMAN standing on the roof of the car
It started to walk along - no, wait ... it positively sauntered along the length of the car and started to make it's way down the rear window of the car. It was at least the diameter of the palm of my hand ... [pass out]
Then it stopped ... and I am sure, postively positive it waved at me .
It was joy riding ... it was a hoon huntsman!
All the while the lady was inching forwards and I was inching behind her. My hair was on end and I was speechless to start with. I then started to jabber ... "Oh my fucking god" and the like, with DD saying, "Pardon Mummy, what did you say?"
After a few "Aaaaghghghhghgs" I began to think if this lady bothers to look in her rear view mirror she will have a cardiac arrest ... unless of course the huntsman was her pet ... which is entirely possible (these Aussies can be hard bastards, even the grannies)
Anyway, when it was her turn to pull out into the traffic the HoonHuntsman was settling himself for the ride ... I am sure that when she pulled off he gave me a rude sign and I swear I heard a small voice shout "Burn it Grandma!"

(I bet they parked in the parent and toddler zone too ... )

The Tin of Doom

I'll admit to a slight nervousness around spiders myself. Since I've had ds, I've had to consciously remind myself not to scream. I just bite my knuckles and whimper instead.

Australia and SA are not high on my list of places to visit any time soon. I shall wait until my eyesight fails.

lilmissmummy · 07/03/2008 12:53

OMG- I am TERRIFIED of spiders and the pictures you have just posted are enough to give me nightmares for weeks! I am going to ahve to sleep with the light on! oh and BTW RED ROMANS- They are HORRIBLE looking and cutting hair?????!!!!!! [sitting under desk rocking emotion]

I am off to see my therepist [running screaming down the road emotion]

eidsvold · 07/03/2008 12:57

Good grief. Cornflour/ghost spider story funny if not so horrific!

My life long fear of spiders stems from when my uncle shot a huge motherf*er with an air gun when I was 3.

I am NOT going to Australia any time soon - mind you AussieSim's no nonsense post made me giggle.

ViolentFemme · 07/03/2008 21:20

PMSL laughing! Just read this out to dh. Love the hoon huntman

chloeb2002 · 07/03/2008 21:33

have been trying to down load a picture of our resident spider. we have called her henrietta. she is a golen orb weaver... I think.. about the size of my hand but grows to the size of a dinner plate, so i will buy small dinner plates! by all accounts they can be seen hanging off road signs up to 100m away! a little like huntsman she is not aggressive and is scared of the whipper snipper, and cockroaches! my daughter has just about disected her whilst not killing her. she is however related to the black widow.
very cool.

eidsvold · 07/03/2008 21:36

chloe - we have a few of those around our garden - the golden orb and our local shops has a huge mass of webs with 5 of them at last count.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 07/03/2008 21:38

I've been moaning about the bloody UK all week.
Now, I have stopped.

ghosty · 07/03/2008 21:43

Look everyone, I have a terrible spider phobia ... I hate the bastards, always have. When I was teaching a little girl in my class did a beautiful project on spiders ... pages and pages of lovely glossy National Geographic pictures of all different sorts. I was so traumatised I had to ask another teacher to mark it ...
So if I can manage to live here, anyone can, honestly. Just stick to the concrete jungle, don't go anywhere near trees (cos that's where the spiders are) or anywhere near rivers (because of the snakes) or anywhere near the see (or you may get eaten by a shark or stung by a jelly fish) - You'll be fine ...
Actually, probably best to remain in Leigh on Sea or wherever you are

my mum loves telling me (as I don't really like spiders) about when she had emigrated to Oz and was working in horticulture - she'd only been out there a few weeks. Picked up a plant pot and as she turned it over there was a funnel-web on the bottom of it - apparently she threw the plant pot hard from where she was standing and smashed a greenhouse window

ghosty · 07/03/2008 21:50

Ha ha ... no don't do that Piffle ...
Honestly, I have seen 4 Huntsman spiders in 11 months and nothing else - not seen a snake or a shark or anything ... not even a redback
(well have seen snakes and sharks etc in the zoo/aquarium)
Have had 2 in my house and seen one outside and then the one yesterday ...
It isn't that bad ... really ...

Fucking hell, I've nearly just pissed myself! As I was reading (and laughing at) your tales I felt something tickling the back of my hand. Calmly imagining it to merely be a hair, I looked down, only to jump out of my skin when I saw something black! Cue girlie shriek and stream of pee a la Little Britain. It was in fact a miniscule fly, about the size of a pinhead, but I was so not expecting anything alive to be there.

DualCycloneCod · 07/03/2008 22:24

whats i a huntsman
