Thinking of moving overseas on my own - am I crazy?

Hi everyone!

Let me just say I have been on MN for hours since I have discovered it and I appreciate the advice and kind words people are giving to each other so much! So I thought I would share this here, just to seek out some opinions and maybe see if I am missing any aspects in my decision making! I have not told my friends and family about it either, so please bear with me!

I have moved to UK nearly 10 years ago from my home country, studied here and worked in London. Was lucky enough to purchase a flat a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, I am having a huge buyers remorse, and even though I will do my best to settle in for next 3-4 years, I think it was a rushed decision.

Due to mortgage and ERCs, I could not afford to sell now and I do not think anyone would buy it in the current market, as it is a new build and there is an identical new build with no one in there at the moment.

My family is all back home, but I do have a great friends support here. I am also single.

For many years I had an inner feeling that I have to move again, but I literally have no ties to any country, except for my home country where I do not wanna go (at least just yet!). So in an absence of any direction, I started looking into astrocartography and found out that Canada (Vancouver island) would be a great place for me (Jupiter and moon lines very prominent there), and it was always calling to me with no apparent reason. Similar positions are in New Zealand.

I am now thinking about waiting it out a little, and then sell and start everything all over again. I will be in the beginning of my 30s, which scares me a little in terms of finding new friends, establishing myself again etc.

Am I crazy for lining up something in 3-4 years with a huge risk of selling a flat quite early? Should I be scared of moving on my own after 30?

Would appreciate any responses!

Do whatever you want!?
It is your life !

Your reasons for moving to particular places are not sound. In fact, they are ludicrous.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 22/03/2023 23:01

Astro cartography is obviously nonsense but if you’re free to move wherever you want then go for it - Canada and NZ both great choices! Could you rent your property out so u don’t have to wait for so long?

jupiter369 · 22/03/2023 23:10

Haha yeah I am definitely lacking in the logical/proper reasons, but as I said not much of a direction, just a big urge to move! Thanks, everyone! :)

It sounds to me like you are mostly reacting to being stuck in a flat you don’t like. Please sit down and think about where you want to be in 5 years, rather than disguising a mini quarter life crisis in astrology crap.

FrankandWalters · 22/03/2023 23:34

The astrocartography thing makes about as much sense as basing decisions on goat entrails, but what would be unreasonable about moving country when you’ve only yourself to please and you feel like it? I once moved to Paris on a whim.

maddy68 · 22/03/2023 23:40

If you are able then your guy is telling you to go so go! What's stopping you ?

I am So happy I left the UK a few years ago

Kay286 · 22/03/2023 23:48

I live in Canada, if you move here you’ll need a substantial amount of cash behind you it’s very expensive !

TedMullins · 23/03/2023 00:21

You can do what you want in your own life but I don’t think it’s that easy to get a residency visa in either of those places

peppermintteagirl · 23/03/2023 05:10

I see no reason why you shouldn't, if you want to! I moved to the UK from NZ for a few years when I was 29 (only returned because of visa situation) and it was great!

I'm a bit of a wanderer but I sort of think, why would you NOT do it if you want to and there's nothing keeping you where you are. Live your life!

jupiter369 · 23/03/2023 09:36

Thank you so so much for the encouragement! I really do appreciate it!

And I do admit basing the whole decision on the astrocartography lacks a lot of sense :) but I guess I cannot ignore the gut feeling as well as it was present from some time ago!

@kay286 I was looking into the cost of living index for Vancouver vs London, Canada in general is definitely very expensive in terms of groceries, the housing market is also very expensive but similar to London? Is there anything else I should bear in mind?

@peppermintteagirl that sounds fab! how did you go about making friends in the new place? from work / hobbies?

Yes mainly made friends through work. I've lived in different parts of NZ too and it's just the same thing. However, I'm an introvert and quite like my own company so I'm never too bothered about having loads of friends.

You hit a crap patch a few months in when the initial excitement has gone, you don't quite have actual friends yet, and you start getting a bit homesick, but if you recognise that for what it is and push through then it gets much easier.

Sometimes with these big life decisions i think the subconscious wants what it wants, then convinces you to go through with them by any means necessary, including slapping a completely illogical 'reason' on top. So I wouldn't discount it just based on the lack of sense. However, if your flat is hard to sell won't that make moving abroad just as difficult as moving within the UK, practically speaking?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 28/03/2023 16:48

Are you a woman? Why on earth would you want to go to NZ?

Thinking of moving overseas on my own - am I crazy?
Onthemaintrunkline · 02/04/2023 02:51

Allthegoodnamesarechosen because no one would base a life changing decision on one photo or incident in the country they were thinking of moving to.
And also because it’s an awesome country to live in…..perfect no, but nowhere is, it’s pretty dammed awesome for all that.

mackthepony · 02/04/2023 02:52

Vancouver Island is amazing. Expensive and amazing

Could you get a visa??

LovelaceBiggWither · 02/04/2023 03:52

Can you get visas for NZ or Canada? That's the starting point.

dudsville · 02/04/2023 03:58

You have a deep wish to move. To my thinking, the astro stuff is just the theory, of sorts, you've used upon which to base your choice. It has no less value than moving just because you feel like it. People do that all the time. Your life is your choice. 30 is young.
