Should I move to Switzerland?

Husband’s found a new job in Laussane. Very cool job, I’m half excited but I do love my life here. I’m mostly worried about the cost of it all.

We’d be there medium term, so for a few years. 2 children, one child in nursery, one in primary school.

Just a few questions….how much did it cost you to move out there (we have a small ish 3 bed home).

Can anyone signpost me to how I find out about medical insurance? I’m interested in the small print (medication & consultant fees, excess best place to find out?) I’ve had some recent issues and I’m worried that I’d be penalised and it would be incredibly pricey.

How much is it to go skiing & actually experience/access all the beautiful things the country has to offer? It just looks so incredibly expensive.

Any experience of Champittet school.

Any experience of living in Pully or Lutry?

How did you go about learning French/local language & how did you find it?

Best/worst things?

Thanks so much in advance

Also if you want to improve your French there are some good courses at the OU with proper books, online material and taught tutorials - I did Spanish beginners 5 years ago and loved it. Might be worth looking into? I know you don't have to be based in the UK to do it as it's all online. x

@juliettesmother , there's an outside chance that we might move to this area in the summer, with a trailing spouse, a 7 and 12 year old. I'd love any tips for living and schools! Plus, any insight on a viable salary for the single earner - I'm not sure that what looks good from a UK perspective will actually be comfortable under Swiss cost of living circs. Hope you don't mind, OP!

@WishIWasACavewoman I don't mind at all. Feel free to PM me any time.

Switzerland is great!
If no one has said yet use comparis.ch to check out costs on health insurance and they also have a real estate section.

The summers here are warm, but it's pretty pleasant and you get to spend a lot of time outside- swimming in rivers and lakes is something people do after school or on their lunch break.
Older appartments can be hot, especially if you are the top floor. But newer buildings are usually pretty good, and either way you can get by with an open widnow and a fan.
You will love it!

Ah, and costs are a shocker. But you have to stop or even better never start changing prices back to Sterling. If you look at it in terms of what you are paid, its much more reasonable.

All the expats I know have a much higher standard of living here, and more spending money, then they would back home.
