Anyone a digital nomad? Where did you go?

DH and I are both self employed, both work online. After a bit of research, I think we’d qualify as digital nomads for all counties that offer the visa. We have kids and are feeling fed up of the uk.

Are you a digital nomad? Where did you go? Where would be the best place for a family?

I suppose I would carefully consider what the tax situation and laws are in the place(s) for where you are considering going. This will probably require some research.

I suppose you would also need to consider internet access, and general safety.

I would recommend not ignoring pensions either. Most people do get old.

Those are my suggestions anyway. Good luck!

Don't have a lived experience of being a digital nomad but if you work with corporates I suggest you gently explore implications of being based outside the UK with your clients. This is a very hot topic now in companies who realise that they need to hire talent where it resides, however, international telecommuting / cross-border workforce mobility are mired in a myriad of regulatory challenges. Most of them are related to tax for the employer and employee /contractor (plus NI, visa categories etc for permanent employees) but also issues such as cybersecurity, professional liability etc. It may be more agreeable for your client if your new host country is in the EU or other developed economies, and if the client has a legal entity in this host country (even if the work you perform is for a UK-based business unit).

Not personal experience but from research for acquaitances...

Most if not all digital nomad visas or temporary residence permits are short-term - usually 6 months or a year. Many can be renewed (but there's no guarantee they will be) and then often only for 3 to 5 years.

So you would have to consider the likelihood of uprooting your children repeatedly, and the implications for their education.

In addition to the situation regarding taxes and social contributions mentioned by PP.
