Which country will have us?

Twopenceworthtoday · 19/12/2022 21:03

I have been researching countries we can go live in (for a better climate/lifestyle)

I've checked out the most obvious ones, Spain and Portugal, but these come with fairly expensive price tags.

Does anybody know of any countries worth moving to that have a simple system that doesn't costs significant amounts to go live there?

Is Goa still a good one? Anyone know what that is like?

I think it's less about cost and more about why they will have you? I've lived in a few different countries but it's not cost me anything because I've been an inter company transferee. On what grounds would you apply to live somewhere?

I assume OP has no particular reason to live elsewhere but would simply like to. So how much does it cost to buy residency?
I know someone who has moved from Eastern Europe to Indonesia, because it's nice in Indonesia. He explained the rules to me and it involved investing money. Plus he has to leave and return every year. So it didn't come across as being very stable. And foreigners get targeted by the local mafia.

Overthebow · 19/12/2022 22:50

Do you have any skills that are in short supply?

Abcdefgh1234 · 19/12/2022 22:51

bali or lombok in Indonesia. Its far away. But beautiful and cheap

Ways to Get Indian Resident Status
There are several ways to immigrate to India and Goa:
studying in local educational institutions;
work in companies with official employment;
starting your own business;
marriage with a resident;
moving to close relatives.

This is correct. I have ill health so not an economic migrant.

It feels like nobody will have us unless we have $$$$$.

I can pay my way, just not golden visa price tag way.

Will you need to be near any particular medical expertise? Do you have the funds for private healthcare?

illiterato · 20/12/2022 15:13

@Lunde has it on the head. You would need to ensure that you can cover private medical care for your condition for life as many countries that are easy to migrate to are easy because state provision for healthcare/ pensions etc are minimal - there’s a low risk from their perspective that you’ll become a drain on the state because there’s not much entitlement to drain - chances are therefore that you’ll put in more than you take out. Countries with large welfare states tend to be more strict.

I think it’s important to really understand your own motives for wanting to move. Grass isn’t always greener and the reasons why one place is better than another rent universal. They are person and often life stage specific.

Twopenceworthtoday · 20/12/2022 15:19

I can pay for private healthcare and maybe schooling depending on the cost. I think we need a cheaper country than Portugal or Spain.

France is less $$$, but still the admin seems onerous and I'm not sure how welcoming they will be at mo to the English who have walked out of the EU.

I want a climate similar to what someone with arthritis would benefit from, dry and low himidity.

I know money talks when asking a country to allow you in, so that's why I'm asking for the lesser known options that will suit a smaller budget.

Do you qualify as a retiree? I believe Greece was offering advantageous terms to retirees in order to attract them.

illiterato · 20/12/2022 15:24

How many children and what age? Are you looking at this as a permanent move?

a friend who has v bad RA lives in Thailand. She is a teacher so got her idea through that and now has residency by staying there a number of years. The climate has helped somewhat but hasn’t been the main dart she hoped for.

illiterato · 20/12/2022 15:24

Idea =visa. Sorry- typing fast

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/12/2022 15:27

It all depends on your specific situation, which you are being really vague about.

Who knows, Mongolia?

kingtamponthefurred · 20/12/2022 15:42

What do you have to offer?

notimagain · 20/12/2022 16:16

On your latter the point your average man/woman on the French street doesn't give a stuff about the UK leaving the EU. We're long term residents and I think we've had a handful of quick conversations about the issue with French friends in the month or so post the referendum, then it dropped off the radar.

The admin will be long winded (we went through all the hoop jumping that was needed for continued residence) but then again the civil servants are paid to be thorough.

Anoooshka · 20/12/2022 16:35

What skills do you have? Can you speak Spanish or another language?

There used to be plenty of opportunities in the Middle East, but I'm not sure if that's still the case. There are always teaching and healthcare jobs out there. And a lot of positions come with accommodation and money towards schooling.

Costa Rica is another place that's easy to move to, but you do need some funds upfront.

Not a right lot with my ill-health.

Just money really, but not golden visa sums of it.

Thanks. I just read in to it. This is such a good scheme. It is much easier to understand than Spain and Portugal. €250k in property is much more affordable than Spains €500k, plus Greece includes the healthcare.
