Frankfurters - what is there to do in Frankfurt on a 3 day trip?

I’ve been looking at reviews of Frankfurt on Mumsnet and the overriding comment is don’t bother going (it seems to score highly on the “cities I have been disappointed with" thread…..). I cannot believe there is nothing interesting to do in such a large city and so I thought I would come to ask the people that will know the city best.

My daughter (in sixth form) and husband are off to Frankfurt for 3 days next week. Anyone that lives/ has lived there got suggestions on things to do? This is her first trip away in about three years and I’m beginning to feel a bit concerned – she is way past wanting to go to a zoo or anything similar. Old chestnut tourist sites? Quirky restaurants or activities?

Thanks very much.

I liked the art gallery - can't remember the name but it will feature highly on Trip Advisor. Apart from that, there wasn't anything else to do and I disliked the city. There were rough sleepers everywhere, the weather was miserable and everything was closed on Sundays.

My most memorable moment is the apple cake I had in the gallery cafe.

I went once. The river boat trip was nice. You sit inside so it wont be too cold and I ate lovely chips.

Its a small city and not the most vibrant. Try Palmengarten for a stroll. The Staedle museum is quite nice too. There are numerous other smallish museums nearby so could try those as well although they are not free!

The newly restored old town is also worth a visit.

Try Cafe Karin for brunch or breakfast. Goethehaus is just around the corner so could do that as well.

Sachsenhausen , specifically Schweizer Strasse, across the river is a bit more lively and there are decent lunch options too.

Definitely stay away from the area around the main station, very rough.

I'll never forget the Tyrannosaurus skeleton I saw in this museum. Stunning!

The apple wine taverns in Sachsenhausen are (certainly used to be) worth a visit if she is 18 (assume it's your husband she's going with, not hers?).
Heidelberg is not far away and very much worth visiting. Less than an hour on the train. It's so pretty just to walk around, and the castle is stunning.

I've lived in Frankfurt for over 20 years and as much as I love the place I will admit it's not looking it's best right now...there is so much construction work going on and lots of shops are being refurbished...but there are still plenty of things to do and see.
I'd definitely recommend doing one of these walking tours

Also going up to the roof terrace of the Main Tower for amazing views of the city

Depending on their interests a visit to the stock exchange could be fun

A boat trip down to the Rheingau could be a good option too if they fancy seeing a bit more of the surrounding area.

Some traditional restaurants to try are Zum Gemalten Haus or Wagner's, both on Schweizer Straße in Sachsenhausen, but if you want some more suggestions let me know what food they like and I can give you some recommendations.
