Looking for any advice from anyone who has relocated from the Uk to Lisbon. Positive & negative opinions would be really appreciated!

We are thinking to relocate with two children 7&8 one of whom has ASD. Any advice for schools, neighbourhoods etc?

Thanks!

I haven't myself, but follow someone on Instagram called Tova Leigh who has recently made the move and has an Instagram page called 'the Leighs have landed'. May be useful and she is very good at replying to comments/questions.

Princess Eugenie is relocating to the area. I'm very jealous @Adventurisoutthere I love the silver coast. We tried to buy out there once but the seller withdrew.

@USaYwHatNow thank you!! I’ll give her a follow and message her!

@justasking111 what made you want to go? Did you look into schools?

We had two sons at university mad about surfing, family spent holidays there. They'd spend all summer there when students moving down the coast in a van camping. I then got pregnant had another boy. It was the perfect time for us to jump ship. The schools at the time were good. Four bedroom detached with a double garage €275000. We're talking 2005. We stayed at the Marriott hotel and searched from there.

The adult sons were keen. The four year old loved it. The Portuguese are wonderful the language fairly easy to learn. We were very upset when we lost it. But gazumping was rife at the time much bought off plan.

Interestingly I noticed even during covid the property market wasn't dented. One of my sons went on to meet and marry a girl whose parents and grandparents had places in the Algarve. We have a great love of the country. Hoping my offspring will buy there. 😉

First things first, visa and income.

Are you UK citizens? If so you will need a visa to live in Portugal.

What income will you live on? The answer to that question may affect the type of visa you need, if any.

@justasking111 thanks so much for your insight, it’s really useful to read real life experiences! We are very much into surfing too so another pro!

@Chersfrozenface yes we are uk citizens so we will need a visa. Rather than income do you know if visas can work off net worth of individuals? We have shares in businesses in the uk but in reality we intend to live off the revenue of rentals in the uk (but not reliant on this) and other money that we already have if that makes sense.

It is possible to get a visa by relying on "passive income" which the Portuguese government defines as "the result of “movable, immovable, intellectual property and financial investments”.

Some examples would be pensions, rents, financial investments (interests), dividends, intellectual property and royalties.

So these are amounts payable regularly. I don't know how Portugal views drawing down sums from assets such as savings. Some other states won't accept that, as they don't like the possibility of people eventually running down their assets to zero and having insufficient income.

Currently I believe you would need a minimum of €8 460 per year fot the main applicant; for a second adult and additional adults 50% of minimum monthly salary (a total of €4 230 per year) and for children and young people under 18 years of age and non-minor dependent children 30% of minimum monthly salary (total of €2 538 per year).

I keep an eye on migration requirements for several EU countries.

The original reason was the hope of moving abroad after retiring. That no longer seems possible, but I've somehow kept the habit of checking.

To get official information, you could follow the links on the UK government's page on Portugal
