DD Studying in Munich

My dd is off to study in Munich (Masters) and is having the most awful time trying to find somewhere to live... 😫

she would prefer to share... be near LMU and just wants a decent place to stay but it seems impossible finding somehwere.... ideally someone on here will go... "Oh! I have a friend who rents out rooms in gorgeous centrally located Munich and their places are really lovely, decent, safe and good price! and they have a room free!!! here's the details!!!" 😅😂🙏🙏👍 however....

if anyone here has any good advice and pointers... that would be great... not really expecting much but I can try can't I?... and who thought I'd still be mumsnetting parent advice for dd1 at 21 years old!!! (i first posted on here when she was first born!!!!! - when mumsnet was just a small little place!!!! 😂)

Looking forward to hearing from anyone in the know... 👍

I live near Munich - my DD commutes in daily by train to study.

What's her budget? She'll be looking at a minimum of 600€ per month for a room, and even then they're like gold dust. Finding accommodation in Munich is hard for anyone even with thousands per month to spend, but something decent in the student district for a budget (if that's what good means) price really is a rarity.

Trying to find a place to stay near LMU on a tight budget is probably impossible. Tbh she really needs to look further out if she's ona budget. Sorry that's not what you want to hear, but so many out of town students have utterly unrealistic expectations (most home students from anywhere within 50km commute from their parents house).

Presumably she's tried Studentenwerk?

Is she aware of the 365 public transport ticket? This makes living further out more of an option.

Student accomodation often has a waiting list of 6 months+ but she might get lucky if someone drops out/ moves home or whatever.

I'm on a group for English speaking women in Munich and every day graduate students post asking for accommodation for under 550€ a month near LMU - I've never seen anyone offer anything but good wishes and the advice to up their budget or look further out.

WG gesucht is the main website to look on. As an example this bedsit in a student block is 988€ per month all in (not food, rent + most bills) and is near Olympia Park which is decent but but quite a way from LMU - she'd probably want to take public transport.

There seem to be rooms in shared flats on here from 400€ per month (probably without bills)... obviously she needs to be very careful of scams and ideally take someone with her to look around.

She's likely to need to pay quite a hefty deposit (up to 2.5 months rent).

@ProbablyPossiblyPerhaps Awww! Thanks for all your replied!
Thankfully she found a place... You were right she had to up her budget! She seems very happy with her choice though we've been sooo cautious about scams! Thank you for your advice! 👍🏼😁😘

Glad she's found something she's happy with.

Munich is incredibly expensive for accommodation and there's a shortage in all categories even if you have a slightly bigger budget! A lot of people have unrealistic expectations in terms of where they expect to live and what they want to pay when they first arrive.
