Being homesick

For economic reasons I’ve moved 6000k away from home, on my own. Where I’ve come to the people are nice, the scenery is pleasant, but there’s a lot of downsides. Public transit is almost non-existent, people drive like lunatics (on their phones, 40k over the speed limit, tailgating) so I don’t want to get a car, the food is shite. There’s no bakery within an hour’s drive of here for example (& no bus or train to that bakery). And all my friends and family are back home.

So I’m moving back in the autumn. But I wondered, for those of you who’ve been homesick, do you miss just the look of home? I think of random street corners and feel adrift. The history I have at home anchored me, in a good way, and I realize I didn’t value that enough. My old city was far from perfect, but I’m missing every tree and shop and view. Just wondering how other people experience homesickness?

I had this when I moved to South Korea a few years ago. I had it in my head that I hated it and even had a countdown calender counting the number of days until I can leave to go back to England.
However, I do regret not embracing the new culture, and traveling more. Maybe try and go somewhere once a week?

I've moved country more than once. Homesick is normal. I also felt homesick when I got back. Living overseas means you're never actually at 'home' anywhere after a while!

I've found being an expat a bit of a vicious cycle in terms of homesickness and I've lived in a lot of places. I've always taken approximately 1 year to settle. I've come back to the UK to live twice and have never quite managed to feel comfortable and 'at home'' here either.

I’ve been living abroad in London for almost a decade. I am still homesick and cannot wait to leave this place and go back home, which I will be doing after I raise my children. I have a nice life here, but it makes me really sad to be missing life back home.

My gosh...isnt this the truth. I've travelled a lot and lived the other side of the world for a bit. I no longer feel totally home anywhere but as if bits of me are scattered all over. Quite beautiful in a way.
