Has anyone relocated to Nairobi with their children from the UK? I have lots of questions if I can find anyone that can help!
I'm quite well informed on the basics, security, areas to live, schools etc. Its more opinions and experiences I'm interested in. Thanks!

I had a friend who lived there for years. Couldn’t get basic food stuffs. Terrible crime. Gated communities . Corruption. Why on earth would you want to move there?

Yes. It’s utterly grim. I spent time there a few years ago. It felt incredibly unsafe all the time. Sorry I can’t be more positive!

My husband has worked there for a long time. It would be so me and my children could see more of him, not looking at a permanent move, maybe around a year.

I've lived there and I think other posters are being unfair. It's true that you do need to take security measures but there's also a huge amount of positives.

OP how old are your kids? It makes a difference

I lived there for a while pre-children. In fact, we moved back because I wasn’t willing to have children out there.

There’s quite a difference between knowing about security issues, and living with them. My work while I was out there meant I had access to information about the general security situation, and it made grim reading.

I have 15,13,5. The eldest considering him taking a year out, as he would be finished his GCSES,the two younger would go to school out there. Heard not so great things about senior schools, so we've also talked about whether a mix of online school / home schooling would work for my 13 yr old.

Security - this is what my husband does. And yes living with it, rather than understanding would be very different which is why I'm hoping to hear of others experiences.

I've visited Nairobi, but no idea of the day to day of living there.

I have lived there during my childhood and some of my friends have also moved to Nairobi from the UK.

The ones that have moved back have generally had good opportunities either really good jobs or businesses that they were running.

I feel that if you have a good income and enough financial strength you live a very different life to your average middle class couple. Be prepared for high school fees and medical bills.

The best part of living there was the amazing weather and option to go on countless excursions on weekends, you could easily go to a national park etc..

Compared to the UK it can be very different for example powered / electricity, broad band and water not as reliable. No delivery e.g shopping /food variety… if you have a good network of friends it can make a huge difference as people tend to meet more often then in the uk in my experience
