Help me with a quiz for Americans please

I'm British, living in Ohio. I have three couples coming for Sunday brunch, all American, all a bit reserved. So I want to do a Great British-American Christmas Quiz as an ice-breaker.

I have some British questions.

But now I'm stuck on the American side. Do you have any fun trivia or riddle type questions about the USA or Christmas?

Happy Holidays!

I was in a pub quiz last night and these were the questions in the US round:

What is the name of the President's aircraft? (Air Force One)

What is the name of the President's helicpoter? (Marine One)

What US state has more cows than people? (Wisconsin)?

What are the four largest States in the US (in order)? (Alaska, Texas, California, Montana)

Which State is nicknamed the Hawkeye State? (Iowa)

They aren't that funny but I hope they help a bit.

Thank you! I love them. Keep 'em coming.

Hi, I'm American, but don't understand what you mean by an American Christmas quiz. What are some of your British questions so I can understand what you're looking for?

Like the other questions, but they don't have Christmas theme. Most Americans like to know the origins of certain Christmas-themed things...Like where did the idea for the Christmas tree originate. What is Santa Claus called in other parks of the world (like Father Christmas in the UK)? However, most of our traditions..the Christmas ones at least...originated in other countries such as Germany or the Scandanavian countries. Maybe google only US sites that have Christmas trivia on them...certain parts of the country also do other traditions. In the South people might decorate with magnolia leaves, whereas some areas might do a popcorn and cranberry decoration.

Also, you might ask something like "Who wrote or first performed that holiday song..."Grandma got ran over by a raindeer?... You might also have a question about the christmas song by the Chipmunks? (supposedly chipmunks singing a song..you'll never forget it once you hear it. ) Also, we have the song, "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.." All songs that nobody has ever heard of (as far as I know) in the UK. Also, many of our entertainers have special christmas shows every year. For example, Bob Hope used to have them before he died, and I remember Bing Crosby's shows when I was a wee child.....google these items and you should find a treasure chest of items.

BTW, I never heard of crackers before I moved to England, and I still think they are the most stupid thing ever. Sorry, but we love the 'what is the worst' thing you ever got for Christmas' questions. Keeps us talking for yours.

Good luck...you survived Thanksgiving. BTW, I've only driven through Ohio but seems a bit too conservative for me...I don't mean to offend, but my cousin moved there and promptly moved away because she doesn't believe in God, and couldn't make any friends there because she wouldn't go to church. Again, no generalizations here...also know some great people from there.

expatinengland · 29/11/2007 19:38

Oh one more thing...I hate mincemeat...yuck, yuck, yuck so don't be offended if Americans hate it and you've made it. I compare it to the horrible 'fruitcake' we have in the US. Ask an American about 'fruitcake' and most likely they will hate it...of course not everybody does. It's like a dense spice cake and the worst part is when those nasty green and red candy bits are put in it..yuck. We have 'fruitcake' jokes even. For the most part, fruitcake isn't popular in the US. I know mince pies are not exactly the same, but close enough for me. So fruitcake trivia questions would be a hit I would think.

(I feel horrible because we throw away all the nasty pies people give us at the holiday.) We've said we don't like then, but people keep forgetting them.

Actually I don't like most English desserts unless it's got clotted cream and/or lots of fresh berries. Sponge cake is nasty. I've heard lots of other Americans say the same thing. So maybe some questions about dessert too.

Good luck!

My-oh-my, EinE, isn't it time to put Johnny Carson humour to bed?

GloriaInEleusis · 29/11/2007 20:03

You goof, Amerryscot. You are supposed to give her the answers.

AMerryScot · 29/11/2007 20:04

That's not in English or American.

chocchipchristmascake · 29/11/2007 20:08

No! I can only get two of them!!! But they are GREAT questions, thank you. I do need the answers.

No mincemeat on the menu, expat. Infact it's all American, most recipes from the Better Homes Holiday magazine supplement. My American hubby loathes mincemeat...

GloriaInEleusis · 29/11/2007 20:10

yeah, I'm not really a fan of mincemeat either.

The underground railroad was a network that smuggled slaves into the north. It wasn't just in Ohio. I grew up very near one of stops in the suburbs of Chicago.

AMerryScot · 29/11/2007 20:11

you obviously don't have a child doing propaganda social studies in an Ohio public school

chocchipchristmascake · 29/11/2007 20:14

Are you in Ohio AMS?

Mercy · 29/11/2007 20:17

Did you want Christmas quiz questions or just an American one? Confused

Is this really going to be an ice-breaker?

chocchipchristmascake · 29/11/2007 20:21

Yes, it is going to be a huge success

I'm just doing a mix of British, American and Christmas questions.

If I don't do something, the women are going to gather round with the babies and talk about bloody weaning and the men will go and watch football. Which is fine for the men but I can't bear it.

There were 8 Ohio presidents, btw, more than any other state.

William Henry Harrison
Ullyses S Grant
Rutherford B Hayes
James A Garfield
Benjamin Harrison
William McKinley
William H Taft
Warren G Harding

AMerryScot · 29/11/2007 20:32

I can think of loads more about Ohio, CCC

Why is Cincinnati also known as Pigopolis?

chocchipchristmascake · 30/11/2007 00:16

Not sure.

Pig iron?

Or pork from the German cooking?

OP posts:
AMerryScot · 30/11/2007 04:26

Because pig fat was used to make the soap and candles, which gave Cincinnati its wealth.

It's Porkopolis, btw.
