Moving to Barbados

Good evening all!

My ex BIL lives in Barbados so I had a couple of amazing holidays when I was still arrived to ExH. However, recently I've been thinking about moving to the island after I've finished uni. I've got 2 more years left of a pharmacy degree. DS will be 9/10 then so a good age to move as he won't have started secondary school yet.

I had a look at house prices and it appears you can get a lot more for your money than you can here? I will have about £40k deposit for a mortgage. Would this be enough?

Is it easy to get a job? I will be a qualified pharmacist but still a qualified science teacher. Is it easy to get visas etc?

What are the salaries like out there? What is it like compared to the cost of living?

If anyone has any experience of living there then it would great to hear it!! Thanks :)

This is on TV in 5 days. If you're serious and not just having a jolly fantasy, I suggest you watch it.

Ohhhh thank you! Very serious! It would be in 2 or 3 years time when I've finished my degree, but there's nothing really keeping me in the UK and was pleasantly surprised at what you can seem to buy over there, property wise, compared to here. I love heat and blue skies which are pretty rare here too!!

Of course you're pleasantly surprised. It's always cheaper to buy in poor, under resourced countries. Especially those that are looking at a dire future.
I should stop now because I actually think anyone planning to move to a vulnerable island nation on the day the IPCC report comes out is barely on the same planet that I am.

What about education and long term opportunities for your son?

sanityisamyth · 09/08/2021 07:56

@BeaBeaBuzz again, something to think about! If anyone has any useful advice it would be appreciated.

Hi OP - you'd need a work permit to work there, so your employer would need to apply on your behalf and prove that there is no Barbadian on the island who can do the job. Hope that helps. If you go in as a tourist your passport gets stamped for 3 months and you're not able to work. Check out the Welcome Stamp scheme which was introduced last year to encourage non-nationals to live on the island and work for one year, with the possibility of extending this.

I had a two week holiday there in 2018 and found it very expensive (self catered apart from a few meals out). This might help with your calculations...
