Moving to Europe from UK - removal companies?

Any one got any recommendations for a good company for a move from UK to Europe? Small house worth of goods, so not a part load.

TIA.

What country?

ralphi · 04/08/2021 20:49

Bit of an odd question as the UK is in Europe…

magimedi · 04/08/2021 22:25

The UK is no longer part of Europe post Brexit.

I prefer not to rreveal details - but, typical Muksnet, you always get some picky people.

Well, the if you need recommendations for movers, some are more specialised for certain countries, others for other countries.

U.K. is out of the EU but in a geographical sense still in Europe. Like Serbia, like Ukraine, like Albania, like Norway. Otherwise what continent would the U.K. be part of? The Americas? Oceania?

TheOnlyKoiInAPondOfGoldfish · 05/08/2021 09:22

It does depend which country really. My cousin relocated to Greece, pre Brexit deadline, but due to COVID he didn't manage to get his belongings shipped out. They are all still in storage in the uk. As things began to move he was told by the shipping companies he contacted that they were getting loads from the uk refused at Greek ports - so they simply weren't shipping atm.

Now that was 6 months ago, so hopefully things are getting easier - but I know his stuff is still in the UK

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/08/2021 19:09

The country probably does matter though. I moved to Portugal a couple of years ago and used a removal company that specifically goes to Portugal every week. They were very good, the process was simple, and surprisingly reasonably priced. There are similar services in many European countries, though all their operations have been massively affected by Brexit, so it might be more complicated to do now.

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/08/2021 19:12

And ours was an entire three bed semi worth of stuff, including about 30 boxes of books, but it was still a part load, as it was shipped on a massive artic - it took up less than a quarter of the space in the lorry. Looked hilarious in our street.

The UK is still in Europe... it's no longer in the European Union, different things.

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/08/2021 20:06

@weegiepower

Different things that are very specifically relevant to transporting goods across borders, so the nitpicking isn't warranted.
PeonyTime · 05/08/2021 20:39

Not to Europe, but we had great sucess with Pickfords on an international move. They have an international arm.

weegiepower · 06/08/2021 01:26

@TheLeadbetterLife not nitpicking, a response to a very bluntly put reply of "The UK is no longer part of Europe post Brexit".

paddlingon · 06/08/2021 01:42

We used Pickfords successfully for a couple of international moves.

DebratsEtiquette · 06/08/2021 06:24

We used Pickfords for an international move. Great team in the UK, dreadful when being unloaded overseas (and various things missing). Will never use them again.

Jokie · 06/08/2021 06:50

One word of warning: make sure that you get your customs forms sorted as early as possible and this includes getting a company who are experienced in managing this process.

MeanderingGently · 06/08/2021 06:51

I looked into endless removal companies when I went to Scandinavia, even ones specialising in certain companies. Couldn't beat Pickfords international on price, service and speed. They were brilliant and when they packed they 'wrapped up' every piece of furniture, perfect.

Coming back I also used UK companies but couldn't get Pickfords as I had to get out quickly (COVID and lockdowns). More pricey, not the same service, blankets rather than wrapping so furniture damage.....

oscarandelliesdad · 06/08/2021 06:55

We have used Anglo Pacific for two international move and they have been very good. Super friendly, helpful team as well.

mummyh2016 · 06/08/2021 07:05

Different companies cover different areas. For example I don't believe Anglo Pacific run their own vehicles into Europe as they concentrate on long distance such as US/Australia etc so they would most likely subcontract. I also believe Pickfords used to subcontract their European work so unless something has changed the last couple of years they wouldn't be doing the move themselves either. Where in Europe are you moving to? It won't be outing to name the country, thousands of people move every month to Europe from the UK.

Hello @TheLeadbetterLife I know this is an old post, but we find ourselves in the same situation now, i.e. about to relocate to Portugal. Would you mind sharing the removals company you used? Many thanks! 😀

BareBelliedSneetch · 25/04/2022 12:51

Who is paying? Work paid for our move and we had excellent service moving back to the UK from Crown.

Hi! Sure no problem. We used Algarve Express, which I believe is still doing removals, though they have stopped their online shopping service since Brexit sadly: www.algarveexpress.com

I've also heard good things about Algarve Removals.

Where in Portugal are you moving to?

almostenlightened · 25/04/2022 12:59

That’s very helpful, thanks! We’re moving to Cascais.

roses2 · 16/09/2022 16:30

Thank you for the recommendations. I'm currently getting quotes from Crown and Pickfords for a move from the EU to UK. I'll post an update once done in two months!

Crikeyalmighty · 16/09/2022 16:32

I used Matthew James- absolutely brilliant in price and quality but to get best prices you need to be able to do part loads - as they use huge road trains.

Einszwei · 16/09/2022 16:35

We used Appleyards (based in Yorkshire) for an international move - highly recommend.

magimedi · 16/09/2022 21:13

I ended up using Britannia Beckwith from Newhaven.

www.britanniabeckwith.co.uk/

Really impressed with them (and it was not the first long haul removal I've done).

They gave me a quote for my removal to Europe in October 2021 & honoured that quote in May 2022. (I used their storage for 6 months whilst I found a place to live)
