Moving to USA - what to take what to leave behind

Hello lovelies!

So. Just that. I’m currently looking at blenders/nutribullets etc and lamps (around the house) but we won’t be bringing any big appliances. I’ve read slightly different things. Some say ditch all electricals and some say it’s could be worth shipping as they may work?

What would your advice be if you’ve done the move?

We won’t be bringing much furniture - tables and chairs and bits and pieces that should work.

I have the removal company coming to do a quote so want to have everything ready for next Tues.

Do you have any other tips for moving your stuff that you found useful particularly as travelling with a toddler (as well as teens)?

Thank you.

Nigella has a toggle button on her website so her recipes can easily be cooked in US measurements, helpful for more British recipe classics.

it is really easy to buy a scales here that measures in metric and ounces.

I have a really basic scales that measures in imperial and metric. I think it cost under $10.

When you arrive, buy yourself a measuring cup set and a set of measuring spoons.

Scales are easy to find here now, but toggling from cups to oz is useless because the conversion is different for every ingredient. A lot of American baking books now give weights, thank goodness. But you'll probably want a set of cups also. (I'm experienced enough that I do convert recipes, but you need a bit of practice.)

If you're toggling on a website (like Nigella's) the different conversion for each ingredient is taken into account.

I was planning to leave the scales for sure in fact most kitchen equipment. Noted about cups I do have them here as recipes can come up in different sizes but need a bee set anyway.

Just had the a virtual chat with shipping company so I’m hopefully leaving all the right stuff behind - kitchen stuff, bed linens, lamps, most furniture etc.

Thanks for all advice given.

This is going to sound odd, but welly boots. You can get them here but not as easily or as cheaply as in the UK. Either you're buying kiddie ones with pink unicorns on them or Hunter boots that cost a fortune.

A good pair from M&S or similar will be worth their weight in gold.

I've been here a long time (US) and the only thing I miss getting is some over the counter mediations that you need a prescription for here. Zovirax, Canesten. Things like that.

I buy it off the shelf in Walgreens 🌸
