Are any expats currently resident in a red or amber zone in Europe, who don't have anywhere to quarantine in UK, going back to visit family this summer?

I am sorry if this should be in the Covid topic but I thought I would find more specific info here.

I understand from the UK press today that many restrictions are going to be lifted in the UK shortly, but that travel restrictions are going to stay the same? Is that right?

I live in a country in Europe that the UK has designated an amber zone currently, but we don't have a second home in the UK like many of our friends, nor do our UK family live in houses that can accommodate us all, so we cannot quarantine with them, so it would mean quarantining in a hotel or sc cottage both on arrival (have to check but I think it is five to seven days) and then the same again on arrival back home and that is outside of the time we actually get to spend with family. Plus all the tests needed to travel are expensive.

So we are coming to the conclusion that we may not see our family in the UK this year both for budgetary and logistical reasons as we are busy with commitments and do not have ten to fourteen days (whichever it is) to waste.

Is this the same for you if you are a British expat currently living in Europe Zone 1, say in France, Belgium or Luxembourg? Will you be travelling back home this summer?

Hoping this changes before August.

Is it possible to load the approved vaccines obtained overseas into the NHS app ?

tribpot · 09/07/2021 05:58

I don't think so, @habibihabibi . The NHS App is a viewer on to your UK GP medical record. Potentially if you moved to the UK and registered with a practice and they recorded your vaccination history on to the record.

You can presumably get a COVID vaccine certificate from the country where you were vaccinated, though?

bert3400 · 09/07/2021 06:15

@tribpot the EU have issued Vaccine certificate, they are very comprehensive and I don't understand why they are not accepted, hopefully they will be soon.

We have a big family trip to Scotland booked staying in a holiday lodge. We are celebrating my son now 19th, postponed last year (18th). This holiday must happen for my son MH, he has sacrificed and lost so much this year.
So we will fly to my parents house, quarantine for five day, test and release then head to Scotland....in a hirecar. It's going to be expensive but we have paid nearly 6k for the accomodation and we could potentially loose that if we cancel ( which we won't) . Both me and DH are fully vaccinated.....grrrrrr

tribpot · 09/07/2021 06:34

@bert3400 yes, hopefully the UK government will shortly recognise the EU vaccine certificate, but that is different from whether vaccines delivered in another country can be displayed in the NHS App. The app is linked to UK medical records (which @habibihabibi may or may not have).

101spacehoppers · 09/07/2021 06:49

It's not just that it's linked to your medical records- the vaccine records are on a different system to GP records which the GP can't access. I've had mine overseas and can only get them added to the 'innoculation' section of my medical record, which won't generate the QR code. It's maddening.

habibihabibi · 09/07/2021 11:26

Might be some light, a cunning plan no doubt
Meaning citizens normally residing abroad will have to pay through the nose no doubt.

www.gov.uk/government/news/quarantine-free-travel-to-resume-on-19-july-for-fully-vaccinated-passengers-returning-from-amber-list-countries

So one postitive we don't need to pay for kids to do the day 5 or eight test and can send them out to the park and shops and to mingle ....madness

Anonymous48 · 12/07/2021 19:43

I'm in the US (which I think is amber) and haven't seen any of my family in England in two years. I'm fully vaccinated as are my husband and our kids but apparently that is irrelevant. At this point if I traveled to the UK for a visit I would have to quarantine on arrival, and that's just not really feasible. I'm hoping that the guidelines will change soon so that fully vaccinated people can visit without quarantining. At that point I can start to think about planning a trip. I'm trying not to think about it too much and know that it will happen eventually. Maybe over Christmas?

GlencoraP · 13/07/2021 20:34

The US is amber that means you have to isolate but not quarantine , so you can travel to a relatives to isolate or a rental property. You are also eligible gor tge 5 day test and release.

Is there a difference between isolating and quarantining? I'm not sure what difference it makes.
Gfplux · 05/08/2021 19:22

I live in Luxembourg and had to travel to the UK for urgent family health reasons.
I travelled Calais - Dover on Monday 26th July and was able to quarantine with family.
However from Sunday 4am 8th August you will not need to quarantine so that is no longer a problem.
I just wanted to point out that I felt really exploited as I paid nearly £300 for 2, 5 (release) and 8 day tests.
Also the quite incompetent thinking that necessitated quarantine if you came from France was just foolish, wrong headed thinking.

PersephoneJames · 11/08/2021 12:46

As i understand it, British expat children still have to quarantine?

Which sucks, my sister is getting married I a few weeks and desperately wants to see them but they can’t spend that time out of school.

Ooh @Gfplux there may yet be hope for us!
This para:

“Under 18 and resident in the UK, a UK Overseas Territory, the USA or one of the specified European countries“

But which are the specified European countries!?

Eeyoreswigwam · 12/08/2021 00:31

Gfplux thank you very much for that link which is incredibly helpful!

May I suggest to everyone who lives “overseas” they sign up for Gov.Uk emails for the country they live in. You can also sign up for Covid travel up dates.
If you are resident in an EU27 country then I invite you to join the Private Facebook group
After Brexit Brits living in the EU27
Just search Facebook and you will find us. Please remember you must be British and live in the EU.

Eeyoreswigwam · 12/08/2021 11:27
