Moving back to England

Hello all,

I don't know if I'll find any answers here but MN seems to be a wealth of info on most topics, so......

My son has lived in Vietnam since 2014 and is now married to a Vietnamese (since 2017) and they have a beautiful 16 month old boy. He and his wife are considering moving back to England within the next year or so.

Is this going to a straight forward thing to do? What hoops will they have to jump through? I'm not sure they're talking about forever.

I'd be most grateful for any insights or experience anyone may have on this.

Cheers

Assuming your son is a UK citizen (otherwise than by descent) and was married to the child‘s mother his child will be a UK citizen and automatically be entitled to settle in UK.

Your son‘s wife will need to apply for a family visa.

I think you will also need your son to apply for British passport for the 16 month old boy. Contact the British Embassy in Vietnam on how to do this.

Overseas embassies only issue emergency passports for immediate travel. Regular passports for those of us living overseas have to be applied for through the passport service in the UK, the same as people living in the UK do.

Agree with the above: grandson might be easy, daughter-in-law (and maybe grandson) could be a paperwork headache.

Go to www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport to see what you need to do to get a British passport for your grandson. Applying from abroad is easy - so long as you can get someone to counter sign it.
We've renewed from abroad, and literally just last week from the UK. Never taken more than 2 weeks.

Does your son have a job in the UK? There are minimium income (or savings) levels require to sponsor a spouse.
