Family in Kelowna BC had the Canadian high of 42 C today. They are fortunate to have air con but go out to work etc.

Lytton, BC is being evacuated due to raging wild fires that are spreading rapidly.

There are other fires spreading.

The heat is nearly unbearable. It is way above seasonal still in Vancouver.

If you have any sway with the weather gods, please say a word for us. This is frightening.

I would hate to be in this position and feel for you all suffering

When will govt take climate change seriously It's very depressing

fallfallfall · 03/07/2021 18:55

Compared so some in no way am I or dh suffering.
Learning to be prepared to evacuate is not a bad lesson as in this case no lives or structures were lost.
It highlighted some issues that hopefully the city will now be forced to deal with. Currently there is only 1 road in and out of this large subdivision, it took 1.5 hours to travel 5km by vehicle. This I suspect will force their hand to complete two other exit routes, which right now are more 4 wheel drive rough terrain type.
Dh has requested I put together an improved bug out bag.
Forestry management needs funding regardless of the temperatures.
The percentage of human caused fires is higher than lightning caused.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 03/07/2021 21:39

@fallfallfall 5 years on from our wildfire and there is still no word on an alternative exit. Fire breaks have been made but it was very much a case of shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted.

fallfallfall · 03/07/2021 22:06

i'm not holding my breath really. lots of stupid talk on fb about alternative bush wacking routes out. people suggesting dirt roads washed out 15 years ago and deer trails barely wide enough to hike and bike forget a family car. going deep into the forest during the night while forest fires burning to get onto a back road that involve private land cement barricades and bolt cutters.

@Redrosesandsunsets

Yes I am really shocked by the children being found dead. I have realized that one mass murderer like Fred West created a storm when we realized he had killed people and buried people and now we see thousands of children being found buried in canada and no one is blinking an eyelid. I never saw canada like this and had no idea of it’s history. It’s shocking. Did anyone else know much of it ? How much does the rest of the world know of this ?
Well there is plenty of chatter on reddit about that including the nuns putting a baby alive in the furnace

We know, we have known for a while of the atrocities of the church .

ElCaMum · 04/07/2021 04:25

@Redrosesandsunsets people are blinking. Many people boycotted Canada Day because of it. There is a lot of people taking the time to listen and learn about what happened to these children. I know many people wanting to bring healing and restoration to the Indigenous People. It’s an incredibly complex situation that is going to take a long time for Canada to work though.

ElCaMum · 04/07/2021 04:26

What has happened in Lytton is so tragic.
So many around here have been collecting items to send up there.
I can’t imagine being displaced from my home like that and losing everything.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 04/07/2021 22:24

@ElCaMum it’s happening all too often throughout North America. 2400 homes were destroyed in my home town in 2016. Many are still arguing with their insurers about the rebuild. A few are in court with their builders for shoddily built homes. Many firms came in, took advantage, then left.
A few truly unfortunate folks lost their home in the 2016 fire and then had their rebuild badly damaged in the 2020 flood.

Best wishes to all in Western Canada.
