Living in Italy as a POC

Does anyone have experience of living in Milan, Italy as a POC? I am black and my partner is Italian. He has been offered a role in Milan and I am trying to work out the best area to live etc as a mixed couple. His family is on outskirts of Milan and his job is in central Milan. I am more keen to live in the centre as I believe it may be 'more' diverse than the outskirts. I'd also like a diverse area because our kids will be attending school as well. TIA

Hi, sorry Im not much help, but there is a black Mumsnetters board, maybe try posting on there, I'm sure they will have some knowledge. Good luck.

I don't think you will have any integration issues in Milan or the outskirts as Italy has quite a diverse population now.Where do your in laws live? Some towns are more lively than others. Also in the outskirts you may get a bigger apartment/house compared to a more central area.

My in laws live south of Milan and the town isn't diverse at all. The area is nice but transportation links into the centre isn't great and rush hour traffic is terrible. So we aim to stay central as much as possible for put budget.
In terms of diversity I seem to find mainly Chinese, Filipino and north African people but rarely black people. Is that the same for you?

The number of black people is not as high as a city like London or NY but there are established residents originally from other parts of Africa like Senegal,Nigeria,Ghana etc... My family is close to Monza.

Thanks Windmill. We've driven through Monza and I did notice some black people there around the park area. Unfortunately North Milan would be too far for ease of getting to the in laws. Ideally we'd like to stay south of the inner ring or just outside it. Perhaps then it be better looking for an area with more international people? Although I don't want to live in an expat bubble either...

@CarBusTrain do you mean Navigli or Ticinese? They are definitely creative and diverse areas.I wouldn't know about expats bubbles...maybe Brera ($$$) ?

CarBusTrain · 24/05/2021 09:45

@windmill26 Ticinese or Porta Romana area. Brera too expensive. Good for a brunch and a wander but I wouldn't want to live there.

I would love to live in Brera if I had unlimited funds and I wanted to move back to Milano Wink

CarBusTrain · 25/05/2021 07:13

@windmill26 I definitely wouldn't say no to brera but I'd prefer the other side of the park near Corso Sempione...
