Wellington, New Zealand

So, tentatively looks like we could be moving to Wellington early next year. We are currently in the Southern Hemisphere though not NZ/Oz, I have NEVER been to NZ, but I have lived all over and in some pretty weird places :) so I am not put off by black mould (I read that is a problem) or windy days.

I am however confused about schooling - my DDs are just 6 and 9 a few months ago. Looks like a lot of state primaries finish at grade 6. would also look at private options but want co-ed which doesn't seem to be very common.

Also... we would want to rent to start with, but so many listings say no pets - we have 2 dogs and 1 cat :( is that going to be difficult?

THANKS to anyone who can give me any tips or advice. Or just general positive info about Welly.

@IslandbreezeNZ the Nelson you describe is not 2020 Nelson - artists have left for cheaper areas, and only a few decent restaurants now. We still have wineries I guess!

It’s a good place to die but I can understand why 20 and 30 somethings give Nelson a wide berth.

IslandbreezeNZ · 19/08/2020 11:55

@popebenedictsp45 ohhh harsh. My parents still live there and so I am still In touch when the Nelson of today. Not sure if you have lived outside of NZ (OZ aside) but you don't know how lucky you are Wink

Athrawes · 19/08/2020 11:57

When do you think you are coming? The borders are closed...sigh...forever maybe?

IslandbreezeNZ · 19/08/2020 11:58

Sorry so many typos from me!!

Popebenedictsp45 · 19/08/2020 12:02

@IslandbreezeNZ

I spent 20 years living in several v large capital cities on three continents before I moved here. Which means I massively appreciate the nature and fresh air, but conversely means that I’ve been spoiled in lots of ways and really miss culture, art, open mindedness and decent food. Hence my desire to move to Wellington, even though it’s small it punches above its weight in all the above aspects.

IslandbreezeNZ · 19/08/2020 12:04

@Popebenedictsp45 fair enough. I must just miss home Smile

IslandbreezeNZ · 19/08/2020 12:05

@Popebenedictsp45 agree Wellington is great. Love it there for the same reasons as you.

Popebenedictsp45 · 19/08/2020 12:12

@IslandbreezeNZ

And I should try to be grateful! I remember so well how amazing it was to leave a gritty city and plunge into bright, sunny and green NZ. I guess it’s just different when it becomes your normal treadmill life.

BTW I would kill to spend a weekend mooching round London - will be a while before that happens.

IslandbreezeNZ · 19/08/2020 12:14

@Popebenedictsp45 ha ha yes I need to learn to appreciate the excitement of London a little bit more. You are right in that the gloss wears off a bit when it is your daily life i.e. school run, work, supermarket shop.

hiphophippity · 19/08/2020 13:22

Early next year. Possibly moving without ever having set foot in the country before... Hmm

If anyone knows NZ Mumsnet type chat where I could get some nitty gritty on schools and areas please let me know. V grateful for all the chat

If you want a beach vibe, a local co-Ed private school and can afford it then I’d look at Seatoun. Scots College a private school, which is in neighbouring suburb Strathmore is going co-Ed at primary levels next year.

The local primary school in Seatoun goes up to Year 8. There is also a Catholic school in Seatoun that also goes up to Year 8.

I’d echo the warning around immigration though. Apparently some companies are giving new appointments from overseas a two year window to get here. Will your husband’s new job be looking after immigration for him?

hiphophippity · 20/08/2020 08:58

He has an Australian passport, from what I understand he should be ok.

barefootcook · 20/08/2020 09:04

Scots College is going fully coed next year. Take a look at the website.

barefootcook · 20/08/2020 09:06

PM me if you want to know more about schools. Happy to help.

Fantail · 21/08/2020 01:37

Normally you are right, that would be good ok. Unless you have Australian permanent residency you would need to apply for a partner visa.

However, currently our border is closed except to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. There are some exceptions. There is more information on covid19.govt.nz

You currently would also have to pay for two weeks in managed isolation at the border after being granted a visa.

NZ weather thread. Finally a place for my favourite NZ weather joke.

Wellington might blow but at least it doesn't suck like Auckland.

hiphophippity · 24/08/2020 11:04

Does anyone have any info/insight on the Wa Ora Montessori school in Lower Hutt? It looks amazing.

If you're wanting the MN equivalent over there, go look on the TradeMe Community Message Boards, and go into the parenting forum.

Trade me is also a good place to get a feel for the real estate market, both rental and sales.

And LOL at MrsTerryPratchett. . .

hiphophippity · 24/08/2020 15:10

Thank you. Can't join Trademe community without NZ address and phone number ...

hiphophippity · 25/08/2020 08:38

Going to message you [smiley face]

I’ve name changed for this

Right now you’re being too broad.

People are talking about Seatoun, Tawa, Kapiti coast, the Hutt, it’s like talking about living in Camden, Milton Keynes and Bexley!

Firstly Australian citizens can’t come into NZ at the moment except with a special exemption, it’s hard to get but not that hard so that’s the first barrier. However there is considerable delay when you do get one so you might need to factor that in.

Secondly have a think about budget and where you want to work if it is not remotely, if you care to say where that is you will get better advice on where to live.

Thirdly schools vary depending on where you live but they operate on catchment areas so if you are in zone then the school has to take you, but that means that you get mixed year classes which depending on school can be just across 2 years eg 4 and 5 or 5 and 6 or across more years, you can also get some quite big class sizes.

Schools depend on location most religious schools are Catholic and they mostly go to year 8 then to a high school, most religious high schools are single sex. There are lots of people who send their kids to private school for all sorts of reasons, probably most of them are not boarding farmers kids and havn’t been for at least 20 years! Certainly not in Wellington.
State primaries will go either to year 6 or year 8, if year 6 you tend to go to intermediate after for year 7 and 8.
Wellington itself then tends to have single sex high schools (lots of NZ towns do) but there is Wellington High which is mixed. A lot of the high schools in Wellington are also huge. They’re also usually zoned.

Finally traffic in Wellington is dire, Wellington drivers spend longer in traffic than Brisbane drivers (although I have no idea whether Brisbane drivers spend a long time in traffic) that might impact on where you live and where you school your kids.

The winters are not generally that bad, (snow very very rare) as is frost, it’s just that the quality of the houses is so poor, most of those pretty little cottages are just that tiny and poorly designed. They are similar to a garden shed in the UK heaps were built in the 1910’s and 20’s but the lifespan is 50 years. Modern stuff is better but there is a big saga about leaky homes you will need to be aware of if looking at modern and because Wellington is so hilly and small the modern stuff tends to be further out.

Renting is tricky, the gov is trying to improve the standard of housing via legislation so landlords are feeling very attacked, prices have been going up steeply. It will be very very hard to rent with pets unless you have a lot of money to throw at the issue. (Gov has made it illegal to take more bond if there are pets and there have been several tenancy tribunal cases where landlords have been prevented from taking bond money to cover pet damage so no one wants pets any more and there are so many other people to choose from & lots of them wont have pets or kids)

If you want to ask a ? On trademe I’m sure you can find a way!

Notnowjo · 25/08/2020 14:39

@hiphophippity

Popular city! love it, thanks.

I love the idea of living right in town but realise with our house of animals it won't be easy to find a rental.
Does anyone have ideas of places close to town, ideally on the sea? where we could rent a family house but that doesn't feel suburban.

I’m actually struggling with the being on the coast but not suburban bit because the coast is suburban.

Except Oriental Bay but family houses are getting so rare there. There are none to rent currently. A lot of the centre is now high rise apartment blocks Mt Vic will have family houses lots are shitty HMO’s but some look lovely (freezing and expensive though)

These are all typical Mt Vic places but one of those has been on the market for a year (maybe 2) so something must be up with it!

Notnowjo · 25/08/2020 14:40

Renting is very seasonal the vast majority of places come up in Jan, in winter there is much less available.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 27/08/2020 23:42

I am an atheist but happily sent my kids to this mixed private school in Wellington when we had an expat post there: www.st-marks.school.nz/
We had rental houses in Hataitai and Khandallah.
