Living in Milan

Hello I have just moved from England to Milan about a week ago with my DH and twins aged 13 months. We were living in Mexico for seven years then a year in Bracknell and now Italia!
Are there any mums out there in a similar situation who would like to make contact. At the moment we are contemplating nursey options so I could work a little but havent a clue yet. Hope to hear from anyone!

Abena, we are supposed to move back to Milan after xmas. I was born in Milan and lived there until I was 28 when I moved to Devon to be with my dh (who is Italian). If you have any question/info you need to ask I'll be happy to answer .

Hello Franca, funny my DH s father lives in Devon, Tavistock and we stayed there fro a month before we came out to Milan. My mother has a house in Cornwall and I went to school there until I was seventeen.
Thanks for offering to answer questions as I will have many! I am learning Italian but at the moment it is non existent! I want to do some part time teaching at the British school my DH works at but of course my twins have to go somewhere. I know you have to register for public asilo nidos so that will take time but I need to work to afford a private nursery. Catch 22!

Have you changed your residenza already? You need to have the "residenza" before you can make application for your dt nido comunale (which is usually between Jan-Feb) and get an ASL paediatrician, for instance. You can also teach English privately, however I'm not sure what are the "legal" requirements to do it (most people seem to do it "in nero" or at least they did so when I was young...)

My dh is employed by a British International school and therefore they have sorted out social security (codigo sociale??) and we have been assigned a doctor but I don't know whether that means we have residenza or not. I have been offered teaching work (supply, English and later hopefully a full time job in the primary school) so I dont know.

Ok that's "codice fiscale", that's great. Residenza is a piece of paper which says that Abena, Mr Abena and the little Abenas actually live at xxx address. I can't really remember how it works, I think you need to go to Comune (via Larga) with your passports and the renting contract. Then the comune sends the vigili who come and check that you actually live at that address (I know it is terribly Italian isn't it . You certainly need residenza for a place at nido comunale/asilo/scuola etc (if you decide not to send them to sitr james) as thy all have catchment area. Sounds like the school is giving you lots of support in this moving business (italian burocracy is overwhelming). Have you sorted the phone out? I'm glad to hear that you will be able to start working at sir james

Glad you mentioned the phone1 Is it really THAT difficult to get a land line in Italy. They say it can take up to a month and the school are actually sorting it out not us! Yes dh went off with our passports somewhere with papers for all of us with our address in Italy so it must be the residenza but noone has visited us yet. I didnt know you needed it for the nido. The children can go to James Henderson but when they are 3 - a long way off yet!

Lol Abena. It's unbelievable. Do you know, I'm happy to go back to Milan for many reasons, but I'm not sure I will be able to cope with all these delays and burocracy... My pil have had problem with their internet connection for the last 6 months... and I'll miss English television (I'm actually wondering if it's possible to get English sky tv package...). and my lovely house... (cries)

francagoestohollywood · 12/09/2007 15:59

yes, you need residenza because you are assigned the closest nido to your house I think. Let me check it for you.

francagoestohollywood · 12/09/2007 16:05

I've just checked the website of comune di milano and it's completely blank

Hi Guys. My dh will be moving to Milan in 5 weeks, so I'll be there part time (lots of weekends and school holidays) and I'll be otherwise remaining in Switerland with our boys. So it would be great to get to know some people in that area and maybe meet up, esp as obv. during school holiday dh will be at work and I'll somehow have to survive. SHould be desperately trying to learn Italian, but just feeling desperate really, lol.

Franca, we have sky here in ch (ssshhhh, bit dodgy I think so don't tell) so am sure it'll be fine there. The only problem is having a UK address.

so hello and please be my friend, and good luck both of you with your moves

Very very old thread. Your children must be grown up by now! But we are considering the same move with x3 very small children. Any tips would be amazing!
