Thanks for those great links. I'll certainly use them. Dagersheim is a bit tricky for the train but we'll work it out. We had to compromise while house-hunting. All the houses we looked at nr to U-bahns/S-bahns were mighty depressing!

I'm learning German - slowly...I did seem to do better when we were out there last week in the midst of it all. Where did you move to? Can't help wishing Dh's work was in the Caribbean instead

Hi there Basset - only just caught your thread, but it looks like you must have been living in Germany for about a month now! Wilkommen in Deutchland! Hope you are getting on OK and not finding things too tough. We are living in Schwabisch Gmund, which is about 80km from you, the other side of Stuttgart. We are here on the same basis - 2 years or more with DH's work (have been here a year on Saturday). DS is now nearly 17 months. To be honest there is a lot about Germany that is great (cost of living for a start) and this is a really picturesque part of the country but, after the initial excitement had worn off, I really struggled with the isolation etc of living somewhere where your DH disappears off to work every day leaving you home alone with a baby in a place where you don't speak the language, don't know how anything 'works', you have no friends, no support network and you also have to get to grips with driving on the 'wrong' side of the road and dealing in a different currency! It has truly taken me nearly all this time to start to settle in (maybe I am just slow!)and feel comfortable being here but things are really looking up now and, dare I say it, I am starting to enjoy myself again. Best thing I did was join the local Krabbelgruppe (mother and toddler) despite the fact that my German was (and still is!) atrocious (but improving!). You will certainly want and need expat company at times but also getting to know local people will help the most with feeling more 'at home' and integrating IMO. Anyway, that's my twopenneth. Give me a shout if you have any general questions now you are here that I may or may not be able to help with.
