House and contents insurance on your UK home

Sorry for the dull question, but I’m struggling to get insurance cover. My adult son lives in our house, and last year we had to take out landlord insurance, which increased our premium from £200 to £500 a year. It’s now up for renewal, but because there’s no formal tendency agreement, I’m struggling to even get landlord insurance. What do the rest of you do, and can you recommend a company please? (It’s our family home which we will return to in a couple of years)

Why do you need landlord insurance if a family member lives there? I would try another provider

AgentProvocateur · 07/12/2019 13:30

I think because we’re not there at all. That’s what I was told last year O

Do you insure the buildings and he insures the contents?

Lochroy · 07/12/2019 13:42

I haven't checked, but normally aren't the questions along the lines of the property being occupied by you or your family? Also that it's occupied for more than xx days per year, but not specifically occupied by you? I'm also surprised you need landlord insurance.

AgentProvocateur · 07/12/2019 13:42

No, I would insure everything - it’s my contents that are in there (apart from his x-box 😉).

I was surprised that I needed landlord insurance too. I think I should try again.

I'd probably speak to a broker in this instance, they'll ask the right questions and will be able to find the right provider for you.

Even if you needed land lord insurance that seems expensive?

I pay @ £113 a year.
Tenants pay their own contents insurance depending on what they have.
I would get advice as someone said.

Have a look a this, might help? Letting to Family Members

Recommends getting a cheap tenancy agreement set up so you can then get landlord insurance.

Thanks everyone. I’ve got a call with a broker tomorrow.
