Voting in the December general election

I've lived outside the UK for just over 12 years so still have the right to vote in the December general election - this will probably (?) be the last one I can vote in.

I've heard that postal votes don't tend to arrive in time, so I'm thinking of asking someone to do a proxy vote for me.

Anyone done this?

Yes, it was very easy to sort. You can apply online. Unless your proxy lives by the polling stations it's worth getting them to apply for a postal vote by proxy which they can do by contacting your local electric office once the proxy vote has been sorted.

proxy vote is very easy to apply for, it will be my second time voting on behalf of our daughter

My mum is my proxy voter and has been since I left the UK. It works very well for us.

Yep, don't rely on a postal vote. They get sent out ~6 days before the election by second class post, so get overseas (depending where you are) by the election. Sending them back in time is impossible unless you speed courier it

You can get a proxy vote - you first need to check you're still on the register, if you aren't you need to get on it. Once that's done, you can nominate a proxy - I've been repeatedly told that this needs to be someone who lives in the same constituency that you last lived in.

I'm lucky as I still have friends there who will do this for me. Not sure what you'e meant to do if you dont

Thanks - this has confirmed I should find a proxy voter. Just found the paperwork online so I'll get on with it ASAP.

Little You can arrange a proxy postal vote with someone in a different constituency - just takes a little bit longer. I've just arranged for a friend to be my proxy voter and it has been surprising easy!

Not true - my mum was our proxy and she doesn't live in our constituency. She did a postal proxy - in fact cards have arrived for her to be a postal proxy, whilst we have had voting cards as we are back in UK.

I got my postal vote yesterday, unlike other elections where it's arrived too late. I hadn't expected it to arrive until the end of next week at the earliest.

Interesting newtb! I will look out for mine. I think it would get back in time if it was posted today or tomorrow.
