Luxembourg, Esch-sur Alzette

Hiya, I would like to know what are the best places to leave in sur alzette.

For me, best means:::: something close to local amenities, where you don't really need to use the car but is not right in the middle of all shopping center or restaurants, if that makes senses...

I have 2 kids, 6 years old and a new born, and we love to be out and about doing different activities, theatre, cinema, parks...

Also, what the primary schools are like in that commune? Is the international ecole any good ?

Thanks :)

Are you already living in Luxembourg? Will you be working in Esch? Lux is small enough to live in other towns and commute. Public transport is excellent and will be free for all from 1 March.

To be honest it is not the nicest place to live in Lux but is cheaper than many other towns and is improving all the time. The old steel works have been into a uni and on the same site there is the Rockhal a big concert venue and a multi complex cinema (that is the neighborhood of Belval). The area around the big Cactus supermarket in Esch is also quite nice. If you will be living in Esch as working in the city try to avoid the motorway between the 2 as it is used by committees back to France and is known for heavy traffic.

I would suggest joining the FB group Luxembourg expats. Lots of posts to search there for info about Esch and you can also ask on there about best places to live.

Commuters not committees Smile

Sol3dad · 30/09/2019 11:06

Thank you very much for reply.
My partner is already there (since yesterday) renting room in central Lux, working in Strassen.

I will go with the kids when the new school term start in January.
Choose that city because of the school... public, with main language in English and have spaces available.

Thanks for honesty, I'm already leaving in a cheap but improving area already... kind of tired of it to be fair Smile
Will tell my partner to stay the weekend and visit the city.

If your children are still quite young would you think about local school system as the schools are excellent at integrating children with no knowledge of the local languages.

This would give you more flexibility on where to live.

You any also want to join Luxembourg Parents on FB.

Luxembourg is a great place to bring up kids. The international aspect is incredible.
If you can make it over the weekend of the International Bazar at the Luxexpo that is a great event and coincides with the Christmas markets too :)

Sol3dad · 03/10/2019 09:25

Thanks, set upon the FB group.

I did consider the local schools, but I decided to go for enfle school just to make rhings for myself bit easier... I cannot imagr myself trying to support my easy frustrated boy with his homework in another foreign language that I did not understand at all... I already have some challenges in English...

Also this might be for only 1 year and then back...
He is in year 2, here in UK(summer baby), he is happy the fact that the new school he will be back at year 1 :) but getting anxious of losing his friends, so trying not to add more challenges to the adventure :/

Thanks for letting me know about the international side :) That's one of the things I love about UK, happy to not losing that.

Xmas market!!! Hopefully will be there by then, going to researcher about that.

Thanks for all info.
If any advice regarding the school, please do let me know; still applying, so have time to change if other better option, that is not the private one... :)

The International state schools are recent additions to the local scene and are very popular. I have a child at Michel Lucius in the city which is another English speaking one. They also have a primary but they may be full.

I wondered from your user name if you are a same sex couple. As you may already know our PM the lovely Xavier Bettel is married to another man and as is our deputy prime minister. Everyone here is different as over 50% of residents were not born here. So it is an incredibly tolerant society.

Feel free to pm if you need more info.

Oh! Sorry, I can see what you mean... Sol3dad »»» should actually say::: Soledad (a Spanish female name / Spanish adjective = loneliness)

Thanks lots for letting me know about that school! That was a big discover.

Happy to help.

My daughter lives in Strassen and works in Esch.
The commute is a dream and she has said often “I wouldn’t like to be commuting to Strassen from Esch”

Sol3dad · 08/10/2019 10:22

Thanks for that; we will be doing exactly the opposite Sad my partner works at Strassen...

I can see that the best option, if we don't get a space in any of the schools in Lux, it will be better to commute to school instead...

All the big school have school buses going everywhere, so you wouldn't have to do the commute with them in the car. Personally, I wouldn't live in Esch, in the morning and evening, your DH will be stuck for hours on the road with all the French frontaliers (French that live in Franch but work in Luxembourg.) Easy to assess, jut tell your DH to do the journey to see by himself.
Also .... whispering ..... Esch is not really a pretty place.....

Sol3dad · 13/10/2019 11:35

Thanks LeGrandBleu, the schools bus could be a good solution, just not sure will be comfortable to let my don travel alone 45 mins :/ will hsve to give it a thought tho

Yep, partner went over the weekend there, and send me some pictures... he wasn't impressed :(

Good solution while I'm getting my self just to drive to the other side of rhe road :)

Sol3dad, he needs to do the commute during commute time, it is absolutely dreadful. You could end up in a place which is especially nice, with the working hours growing exponentially .

What made you choose Esch? The public international school?

Have you considered the European School in Mamer? Or enrolling the kids at the free international school but living somewhere else? If there is a catchment live to 2 months on Esch and then move.

Sol3dad · 15/10/2019 03:47

Yep the school is what going to mark where to live; I have applied to few, we are moving in the middle of an academic year, bit difficult to find space...
Esch has availability so far...

Have a look at Schifflange, especially with kids, but if you have to stay in Esch, the suburb around the hospital wasn't bad. Avoid at all cost the train station. They are trying to push Belval, and you will find a lot of different types of housing, but I found it quite cold, when I went to visit the Uni, but that was some years ago.

You must take a flight and go and have a look for yourself.

Sol3dad · 15/10/2019 10:35

Thank you :) I will investigate those areas.
