Mouldy storage container - advice?

Mammyofonlyone · 14/09/2019 09:11

My friend has just moved back from overseas. After a lengthy delay the storage container has finally turned up with all the belongings (ie furniture, bedding, clothes, etc etc). After excitedly opening it she has discovered that EVERYTHING has gone mouldy. They have just bought a new house and uk cars so don't have huge cash reserves and therefore can't start replacing everything. Does anyone have any experience of this, or how to deal with mouldy sofas, towels etc? Any has anybody ever successfully pursued the storage company for the damage?

She needs to speak to the storage company and claim on the insurance

We had a storage container that had extensive water damage.
Contact the insurance company ASAP.
Video the damage and photograph, set damaged goods to one side until assessor has seen them.
Make sure you provide evidence of purchase costs or replacement costs. Don't accept first payment offer if you aren't happy with it.

Def insurance call.

Storage facilities are normally covered for damage caused by external forces like storm, flooding etc. But they may not have cover for something like this, which sounds as if it might have resulted from dampness which was in your friends belongings when they were put in the container. People are usually advised to take out extra insurance cover for this kind of damage. She needs to check with the storage company , as to what she can do.
