Getting an Australian Visa

DS has just come back from Australia after a two year working holiday. He's absolutely clear he wants to go back as soon as possible...and wants to spend the rest of his life there.

Problem is, he doesn't have a tonne of money or a job on the required occupation list.

We've been helping him look into options for a medium term strategy...possibly a post grad course that would get him into a career on the list...but that's going to be a two or three year plan.

Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions that might be worth considering?

Thank you

It’s been a while since we did this but a 457 visa is employer sponsored. Would his employer sponsor him?

Sadly, he doesn't have an employer!

Vida 457 no longer exists.

He should try to get certification and working experience in one of the fields on the skilled visa. It might take some years to achieve the education and work experience required.

A postgrad course isn't going to be a cheap option, international student fees are huge and need to be paid upfront each semester. His best bet is to go home and qualify as something on the skills list, get an employer to sponsor him, or marry an Australian. There really aren't any cheap or easy ways to get in permanently, but if he wants it enough there are ways.

One more thing, if he is on the working holiday visa, I think you can now do extra regional work to stay a third year? Might be work checking out.

Years ago people would move to NZ with a mind to getting NZ citizenship and then move to Australia

Or get a de facto visa.

What about a study visa? He can do the requisite study in the city he wants to be in, and then see how he goes jobs on the Occupation List. I think he would also need experience after the qualification, and not just the degree. Not sure it would be cheap, but there is no cheap way particularly.

@DownUdderer might be a bit difficult if he doesn't have an Aussie partner!!

The New Zealand loophole has been pretty much closed up now.
