Moving to Perth, Australia

Hi, my husband and I are moving out in a month, he has a job and we both have visas through this. We’re leaving adult children in Europe so it will be just the two of us!

Anyone got any pointers about settling there, things to take, things to leave, places to make friends etc. Any help gratefully received!

Fingers crossed! I’m sure there’s plenty of overlap but check out Realestate.com.au too

You will have no problem when you get here. The rental agents won't rent to you unless you or someone in your place views the property. There is a huge amount of properties on the market. The rents are significantly lower than when we arrived 8 years ago

We lived in Perth for two years. We lived in Darch, one of the northern suburbs. Sil lived in the Hills but sold up, came back to the Uk and is moving back as they’ve bought land in Secret Harbour. My other sil still lives in Joondalup.
REIWA is a really handy website, but getting a rental is s ball ache and a half, it took us six weeks of trawling and bidding and being let down. We didn’t have references as still had our house in the UK.
We were there 8 years ago.
Freo was always nice to visit on a Sunday, I haven’t a clue why we went on Sunday’s 🤷🏼‍♀️
Target and Big W were great for household stuff,
I preferred Coles to Woolies as a supermarket, and as above Spudshed is great for saving money on fresh food.
Beef was a decent price and so was chicken iirc, but lamb and pork were pricier. I really liked Japanese pumpkin, it was cheap and was great roasted with other veg like capsicum peppers, onions, potatoes.
We spent every other day bbqing, we had friends round each weekend rather than going out, and also meeting in places like Whiteman Park, Hillary’s the beach.
Good luck with the move 🍀 🇦🇺

Thank you! Lots of good info there Longdistance. You’re right the rental process is really painful, we just can’t see anything at the moment so will stay in short term for now and hope something turns up when I’m there.

Another hello from Perth. We live in Wembley and so we could have been almost neighbours. I think you were unlucky not to get the house as the rental market has definitely softened recently.

Try not to stress, we've relocated many times and something always comes up just when it all starts feeling a bit hairy.

We originally left the UK for Perth and have moved to several different states and countries since. We chose Perth to call home so it can't be that boring, expensive or isolated Wink

Cozyblanket · 03/09/2019 14:01

We’re still looking in that area so you never know! In the meantime, if you hear of anything coming up, please bear me in mind! We’d like a pool for this first year at least.

I wouldn't rent a house in Aus without seeing it tbh so no matter how nice the house you applied for looked you might have dodged a bullet, I think the world's most creative real estate photographers live here 😂 We are in Sydney and when we arrived and started looking at rentals, despite doing many months of research, had to up our budget as I was horrified by the differences between photos and reality. Good luck with the move.

Cozyblanket · 04/09/2019 08:15

Hi Snows, I agree, my husband viewed a few properties and found exactly the same difference! This one was viewed by a relocation agent who I think has a good idea of what we want but hopefully something else will come up soon.

If you would like to pm me your requirements I can post on our community forums for you? I see a few rentals advertised that way?

Cozyblanket · 19/09/2019 02:28

Well we are here and the housing rental has gone very quiet!
Just waiting on a response for one now but we couldn’t offer the full asking so I’m not holding my breath.

Oh that’s a shame! Is this one in Floreat too?

AllyBamma · 19/09/2019 11:40

Oh and welcome to Perth! I promise once you’re in your own place and settled, you’ll love it Smile

Cozyblanket · 19/09/2019 12:32

We’ve had a verbal acceptance on it! It’s in Shenton Park area - keep your fingers crossed!

TheSandgroper · 19/09/2019 22:54

Shenton Park is lovely. My Grandparents lived there when I was small.

CakeRattleandRoll · 30/09/2019 10:18

Yes, Shenton Park is great. Leafy green suburb, on the train line so easy access to Perth and Freo. Do you have DC? Shenton Park Senior High school has v good reputation.

Hope you're finding time to enjoy the beautiful weather we're having!

Cozyblanket · 30/09/2019 11:11

Hi, no we’ve come without children, they have jobs in Europe, that’s one of the hardest things but they are ok.
Weather is wonderful!

Hi! Yes we’re settling in ok, a bit chilly though!

hertsnessex · 03/06/2020 12:47

Hi,

Pleased you are settled JustMoved123!

We are looking to move in 2021 as my husband has been offered a job there. I am hoping someone can anyone tell me about the schools system in Perth? Our boys will be 16/16, one done GCSEs this year (or not due to corona) and one would have just completed them (takes them may./june 2021 and then we move.

Thank you x
